In Breast Cancer Support Forums > General & Support

"I've heard about it, saw it in the movies (as I recall, in "OZ", the series about the federal prison, there was a mention of that), but I don't know how much of it is truth and how much is fiction. And if it's more truth than fiction, how common is it?
Lately I think very much about this, since my mother recently passed of breast cancer...
I know breast cancer can be hereditary

Written by Alan

"geneticsEvery cell contains your genetic information in its nucleus. The genes you inherited from your mother and father are largely responsible for how your body and mind behave and they are like an instruction book of controls for your bodily functions. The risk of contracting breast cancer has shown to increase when inheriting certain genes that contain an anomaly that may result in uncontrolled cancerous cell growth. It is not certain that if you have inherited these genes you will contract the disease, but studies have shown that in this case your risk is double that of people with no genetic heredity history.

"check_risksStatistics, statistics, statistics. Getting the numbers is not always enough, understanding them is what counts.
Every woman is at risk of contracting breast cancer. Over a 90 years life span the risk of getting breast cancer is 14% for women. This means one in seven women on average will get breast cancer. There is of course another way to look at this data - 14% risk means there is 86% chance one will NOT get breast cancer. This article is meant to look at various risk factors and how much effect preventive measures have on reducing the risk.
