How are they connected?

"Addiction and mental illnesses, I mean?
Is it - a mental illness makes you look for relief in addictions? Or addictions can eventually lead to mental illness? Or they're not so connected?
I've been an alcoholic, and then switched to "powder". For a short while I was drunk and high, at the same time, almost all the time. It's true that all this crap made me feel and act "craz"
