Outgrowing Bipolar?

My son was diagnosed with Bipolar illness at the age of 20 even though his father and I believe that his illness started around the age of 16. He has had at least one episode of mania but we are sure that he has had more and he also has displayed episodes of extreme despair. From what we have learned since his diagnosis and treatment since January of this year we are wondering, "Could he possibly outgrow this disease?"

Jokes abound about the challenges parents face when their kids enter adolescence. Although there's growing evidence that this phase of development isn't as chaotic or troublesome as conventional wisdom says, there's no question that teens exhibit some new troublesome behaviors and attitudes as they make the transition from childhood to adulthood. If your teen is diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a child, you may mistakenly view these new developments as bipolar symptoms. When bipolar symptoms and adolescence make an appearance at the same time, it can be even more difficult to distinguish the two. Teenaers typically start taking mor risks, get moody, get embroiled in family conflicts, become excitable, had bad days, and get expansive, impulsive, and unrealistic. We see the same kinds of things emerging-albeit in more dramatic form-when teens start to develop bipolar disorder.

Recasting the Parenting Role

Parents with a bipolar child have to give up on the idea of "typical" parenting skills. All the old bromides-consistency and authority, the parents must be in control so the child feels safe, and so on-don't carry the day inside this family (or at least they don't until the child is stabilized).
