MDJunction to me

MisaBlue01"MD Junction has been a safe haven for me. I have met so many caring and understanding people and i don't feel so alone anymore with my bipolar. I now know that others suffer as well and that we need each other for support. I hope that one day we can all learn to love and respect each other more and that no one will have to suffer anymore." Outgrowing Bipolar?
Written by Chrissybell1
10 August 2012

My son was diagnosed with Bipolar illness at the age of 20 even though his father and I believe that his illness started around the age of 16. He has had at least one episode of mania but we are sure that he has had more and he also has displayed episodes of extreme despair. From what we have learned since his diagnosis and treatment since January of this year we are wondering, "Could he possibly outgrow this disease?"

Bipolar disorder looks different from different family members' perspectives
Written by lotsoflittleones
07 June 2009
Teens' perspectives on why they behave in these erratic ways:      "I'm fine;  everyone else is crazy."        "If I'm crazy, so are my friends."        "I'm so screwed up, life is hopeless."
Parents' perspectives:      "It's the kid's fault-he's a bad kid;  he's lazy."        "It's all my fault;  I'm a bad parent."        "It's the environment-the teachers are too hard on her."        "His friends are bad for him."        "There's something wrong with her brain."   Siblings' perspectives:      "My brother is a jerk."        "She just does this stuff to get attention."        "All my parents care about is him and his bad behavior."        "I can't wait until I don't have to deal with her anymore."

Know Who Your Teenager Is
Written by lotsoflittleones

Many teens with bipolar disorder have been described by their parents as having been the best and brightest-precocious and smart as children, meeting their developmental milestones earlier than others, more creative than their peers.

When is it Bipolar Disorder and When is it Just My Teenager
Written by lotsoflittleones
06 May 2009
Jokes abound about the challenges parents face when their kids enter adolescence.  Although there's growing evidence that this phase of development isn't as chaotic or troublesome as conventional wisdom says, there's no question that teens exhibit some new troublesome behaviors and attitudes as they make the transition from childhood to adulthood.  If your teen is diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a child, you may mistakenly view these new developments as bipolar symptoms.  When bipolar symptoms and adolescence make an appearance at the same time, it can be even more difficult to distinguish the two.  Teenaers typically start taking mor risks, get moody, get embroiled in family conflicts, become excitable, had bad days, and get expansive, impulsive, and unrealistic.  We see the same kinds of things emerging-albeit in more dramatic form-when teens start to develop bipolar disorder.

Recasting the Parenting Role
Written by lotsoflittleones
01 May 2009
Parents with a bipolar child have to give up on the idea of "typical" parenting skills.  All the old bromides-consistency and authority, the parents must be in control so the child feels safe, and so on-don't carry the day inside this family (or at least they don't until the child is stabilized).
