|A little about me:||Hello Everyone,
My name is Jennifer, my sister Cynthia told me about your group, I live in Dalton Ga.I thought I could get some information disease by starting here with people that have personal experience with it.
My mother recently was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver, in June 2011. She went into the ER with a GI bleed and was admitted into the MICU Dept where she stayed a week trying to get all her levels and fluids stabilized, and she ended up having to have an amneosentesis after they controlled the bleed pulling 3 L of fluid off of her abdomen. It was at that time based on her billirubin and other labs they decided to do a liver biopsy at the same time. She had very low platelets as well. She got stabilized and was able to be discharged.
The beginning of August, she went to a followup Dr that she saw at the hospital and paid cash. (here is the catch SHE HAS NO HEALTH INSURANCE)She has been unemployed for a year now because she was having health issues that up until now we realize were being caused by an undiagnosed cirrhosis of the liver at that time, so her job let her go. Since the diagnosis of the cirrhosis my sister has been working with her and SSD to try and get a rush for that and we are trying to get her approved for adult needy medicaid. But no response on either as of yet.
Her follow up DR said she needed to see a hemotologist for plan of care, she called the hematologist and they told her she needs to see a hepatologist so she doesnt have to pay out of pocket to go to both. My mom is on a very fixed income and cant afford financially, physically, or mentally.. To be getting the run around. She is basically sitting at home dying at this point because the few hemotolgists she has been referred to want take self pay patients.
My mom is only 57 so she is not old enough to qualify for medicare. She is very fatigued, jaundiced, sleeps alot, has her days and nights mixed up, doesnt have much of an appetite and says nothing quenches her thirst, and has the hand tremors. She needs to see someone I dont know if its a hepetologist, or a GI dr to get her on a course of action for plan of care. I just dont know what to do.
Currently she is only taking magnesium, and she is taking adelctone 100 2 x daily and another 50 mg lasix daily. Thats it..She has gotten labs once in the last 2 months and thats all the followup dr from er has put her on. Shouldnt she be on lactulose or something to help her body do what the liver cannot?
Also just wanted to let you know it is not alcohol induced cirrhosis, it is a genetic disorder where her body produces more iron than it needs and its hard for the body (liver) to rid itself of the excessive amounts. (Hemochromatosis) She never knew she had this
Any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated. I just didnt know where else to turn or start.
I'm A concerned daughter and I dont want to just sit by and watch my mom die.
Is there anyways someone in the family can donate part of our liver to her?
