About Awareness Ribbons

General
Gender: Female
City: Dallas
State: North Carolina
A little about me: Divorced, 49, female, just diagnosed with type I bipolar with psychosis and PTSD. I tried Seroquel with horrible heart and BP side effects. I am so happy to find a support group like this. I live alone, out in the middle of nowhere, isolated, and spent the last 2 months wanting to die. Reading about others having similar issues, symptoms, and medication reviews really put me at ease. I want to help others like they helped me.

...everyone has one. Look, I see a neuropsyche and have been for 8 years now. I have depressive disease, but not BP. I heard all the whispering behind my back from co-workers (when I was working), but you know what? It's YOU that matters; not what others are liable to think. They don't know you. They don't walk in your shoes. They cannot feel what you feel, and what you feel is legitimate.

The best way to conquer the depression (for me) was to own it. Period. Stigma be damned, because that's all it is...a preconceived, and often erroneous, societal tatoo. It means nothing.

It's sad that this disease is misunderstood. If more people would bone up on the neurotransmitters, amino acids, etc., etc., that cause the brain to function; and what happens where there are not enough of those chemicals; there would be a better understanding that the brain, like the heart or the gallbladder, can become diseased or dysfunctional. It does not make you a sociopath. It's the same as saying that someone who has a heart attack "didn't have a heart" and other such nonsense.

Own it, girlfriend! BP is not a character flaw. It's as real as the fibro, MG, lupus and any other illness that may befall your body.

I lived my childhood in the shadow of my mother's BP. The institutionalizations; five attempted suicides (she's alive and stopped after the 5th one, thank God) stole a huge chunk of her life and my childhood. And she was institutionalized during the days when shock treatments were par for the course.

She's had psychotherapy and is on medication and for the most part, more stable than she was 40 years ago.

There's an excellent book called "The Quiet Mind" about a woman with bipolar disorder. I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of the book, but I'm sure you can find it on Amazon.com. I read it years ago and it helped me understand not only my mother's torment, but it also showed me how to cope with her illness and love her for who she is...no matter what.

It takes courage to accept what you're going through. You are grace under fire, my friend. Don't feel weird about anything.

Peace out.
