My Awareness Ribbons
"I was sexually abused as a child by my father and want to be there for others who endured the same thing. Also, alcoholism was an issue in both parents at different times and my brother struggled with a heroin addiction for most of his life. My sisters and I didn't use any drugs or alcohol but suffered from the effects just the same. I want to help and encourage others in any way that I can, and to let them know that I care."

a HugYou are special and deserve to be treated as such. Never allow anyone to tell you any different. For if they do, then they do not deserve to know you, much less have the right to call you a friend.

a HugSpring is a time of new beginnings and an opportunity to look at what we've achieved so far. On the sexual abuse forum, we're looking at what we've achieved despite the hardships in our lives. Come and share in our mutual awesomeness and have a great Spring!

My Diary
Changing Thoughts
So...I used to tell myself that I couldn't do things as well as others could. This would end up being true in most cases, because whatever you hear over and over again, your brain believes. One day I decided to start believing that I could do things just as well and maybe even better. My confidence rose and soon I was doing things just as well and sometimes better, depending on the task. I had to realize that we all have special talents and gifts that come naturally--but then we all have other things we really have to work at. When we put out the effort and take the risk, we find that we (in the big picture) are no better and no worse than anyone else, it all balances out. We just have to put our best efforts into all we do and believe in ourselves and others.
One example is that I have always loved to sing. I sing pretty well, but was usually self-concious about singing solo because I knew there were so many truly gifted singing voices all around me. One day the song I had written was so inspiring that I just HAD to get it put to music! A friend of mine put me in touch with a friend of his who played and sang beautifully. I was so excited that I lost my inhibitions and sang to her over and over while she composed the accompaniment to my song. She was completely in love with my song and told me how talented I was and what a rich, soothing voice I had. From then on, my belief in my abilities shot up into the high positives and we went on to do many more songs that we sang together and recorded. Whatever we choose to believe about ourselves from either our own self-talk or someone else's assessments or opinions has a very deep impact on us. We just need to choose to believe whatever is healthy and helps us move forward into our best selves. If we have undesirable traits, then we need to take steps to improve or change them. But we must not tell ourselves that we are worthless or stupid or not loveable or that we can't change. It is simply not true!!
