Can you fly if you suffer from high blood pressure?
Written by littlebopeep1

Question

I suffer from high blood pressure and am currently being checked every two weeks while waiting for an appointment with a specialist at the local hospital.

I am however due to go on holiday in three weeks time and have been advised by numerous people (not medical people) that you are unable to fly with high blood pressure (something I have done on many occasions in the past).

My last reading was 149/115, but the time before that it was 120/100. It does appear to fluctuate up and down.

I am not due at the specialist for another two weeks and would appreciate it if you could advise if there is a set level that is safe to fly from. I am not an anxious flyer and find flying very relaxing

What is blood pressure?
Written by littlebopeep1

Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of the body in vessels called arteries. Blood pressure is created by the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as it circulates and by the force of the arteries as they resist the blood flow.

High blood pressure increases your chance (or risk) for getting heart disease and/or kidney disease, and for having a stroke. It is especially dangerous because it often has no warning signs or symptoms. Regardless of race, age, or gender, anyone can develop high blood pressure. It is estimated that one in every four American adults has high blood pressure. Once high blood pressure develops, it usually lasts a lifetime. You can prevent and control high blood pressure by taking action.

In this section you will learn more about what high blood pressure is and what it does inside the body.
