Dear group: I am writing this for my girlfriend who is unable to focus on the computer screen due to her condition. I am confident that those of you who either have or had a vestibular-related disorder will be able to offer some competent advice.

My girlfriend is age 65. She has always been very active. Two weeks ago she woke up with vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. She had no fever and her blood pressure was slightly elevated. She could not get her head off the pillow without everything spinning around. She could only focus in one position in bed. This lasted several days and is very slowly subsiding.

Her internist thought it was BPV (Benign Positional Vertigo). Her ENT doctor feels it may be vestibular neuronitis. She had a brain and ear MRI several days ago and we are awaiting the results. He gave her some head,ear-eye, and ear-body exercises to perform which have been somewhat helpful. She has been taking Dramamine and Valium which have helped her to sleep and allowed her to resume some normal activities around the house. Antivert (Meclizine) was ineffective.

All advice and experience you can share will be greatly appreciated.

[b]6 weeks ago I woke up with a sudden onset of tumbling & spinning in which I couldn't lie down for the next 6 hrs. I too had nausea, vomitting, diarrea, etc. The following 2 days it disappeared with NO symptoms. Then the 3rd day, I became extremely dizzy & room spins again. Was taken to the my GP doctor who after examining me sent me immediately for a CT scan. It was normal showing no tumors. She put me on meclizine which helped the vertigo nausea & spinning but I was still too dizzy to function on my own. In another 3 days, I saw an ENT specialist. He suspected inner problems & sent me for a VNG test which confirms if it is inner ear related or not. Inner ear problems can occur from many causes. My results showed definitely NOT inner ear. The next step was a brain MRI done with a contrast dye & also without. I received the results yesterday that showed everything to be normal. It's been 6 weeks & I still am extremely dizzy off & on every day. Ive learned tro rate my dizziness on a scale of 1 to 10 (like they do for pain levels) and mine stays around a 5 most of the time & can go as high as a 9 or 10. It doesn't matter if I'm sitting, standing, or lyng down when the onset occurs & it usually doesn't last over 15-20 minutes, but is very frustrating & leaves me with a headache every time. My BP has remained normal throughout this whole time, but my vision is also affected when the extreme dizziness occurs. I too, do the head exercises he gave me to do twice a day. Nothing has helped so far & I am normally an active person but this has brought me down fast and hard. The ENT had no further suggestions except to go for PT for a period of time & erhapos see my neurologist. I hope your friend has better luck in getting a diagnosis than I have had.

Thanks for writing back to me. I hope that by now you have a diagnosis. And a treatment. Are you a man or a woman?

I'm in the fourth week now of vestibular neuritis and most of the vertigo is gone, but I remain with nausea and a stomach ache and feeling very tired. Still cannot wear my glasses, it's as if they are someone else's prescription. So I can't drive, work out, pick up work that I do at home on the computer. Someone will bring me the work and I hope I can do my reports, I write medical reports called Discharge Summaries once a patient is discharged and I have brought home copies of the important pages from the chart. I have alot of trouble sleeping and you are right, this has gotten me really down as well. I have to eat small meals. I hope that you are feeling better each day. I will start vestibular therapy in 2 weeks at a local hospital here in Florida. Thanks for replying, I appreciate hearing from you and wish you a full recovery soon. Bev

Thanks for your response. I am a woman, but I still have no diagnosis other than just vertigo, or treatment. I was told the VNG test ruled as many causes as well as the MRI. I appreciate your writing & wish you well & a complete reovery thru the therapy. Vicki
