I am Lori and I have TRD. The current Dr. I am seeing mentioned Vagal Nerve Stimulation. Has anyone had this and can you please tell me your experiences with it.

Thank you

I have not had that procedure, but just wanted to welcome you to the group. TRD is so hard to deal with but you are not alone. The only thing I have read about the procedure is that--if you are a candidate--it can work right away--but I don't know how long the results last.

Thank you for the warm welcome. It doesn't look like this group is too active, is it?

It comes and goes. It hasn't been very active lately. You might try the regular depression group, but it wasn't for me personally.

I found they didn't quite understand longterm--life long Depression. I used to be a group leader there but it didn't last long. TRD is something only those who have it can understand--in my opinion.

Definitely no one understands TRD. Yes, to understand they must be in your shoes.

Hello Lor, My name is Patrick and I have had the VNS implant since 2005. I joined this group not only to get to know others who have TRD but to respond to your question. I was on 'google' and typed in VNS and your question popped up.

The device does help but medication is still needed.

I'm an Advocate

One of my old pdocs was strongly suggesting VNS or ECT to treat my depression.

After some lengthily research I decided it wasn't the treatments for me.

With VNS if it does not work the implant can be removed but the electrodes are permanent.

It also is a long term treatment and can take up to a year to get results.

ECT aka shock treatment is another story all together. Though touted as a safe alternative it is far from the truth. It has worked in some people with TRD though from what I've read on it there is still a lot of controversy on its effectiveness in treating depression. I've seen first hand what a round of ECT can do to a person and would not even consider or recommend it to anyone. Working close with my pdoc we have managed pretty well so far with meds and psycho therapy.

peace & hugs
Rick

The wires that are left after the removal of the VNS implant will not be a problem in the body. The worry was if the wires were removed the procedure could damage the Vagus Nerve. In the past (before VNS implant) I was given thirteen ECT treatments with no positive results. All ECT did for me is destroy many of my past memories.
