I've had TMJ (at least that's what they tell me) for almost a year. My jaw constantly clicks when its bareable. It thunks and pops and causes serious pain when it's aggrivated. It never stops bothering me. It started with an ear ache like sensation and I went to my doctor who told me it was an ear infection. He put me on two different antibiotic cycles, then refered me to and ear, nose, and throat doctor. The ENT doc told me it was TMJ. So i talked to my step father who is my dentist and he said i'd grow out of it. After months of pain he finally took me to an oral surgeon who swore it was my wisdom teeth. So i had them removed. NO luck. It still clicks and aches and drives me nuts on a daily basis. Does anyone have any advise??

You have to realize that TMJ is no cure for TMJ. There are treatments to help reduce the pain, but they don't always work. TMJ is very difficult and painful, but trust me it gets better. You just have to go about it one day at a time. This is all hard to come to terms with. I mean I still have problems dealing with the fact that I'm stuck with this for life and I've been dealing with this for over five years now. The treatments do not always work and can sometimes make the TMJ worse or not have any affect on it whatsoever. It's just important to research your options and don't give up.

So, your step father is a dentist, and he didn't suggest a dental appliance? I'm kinda surprised, actually I'd say appalled? My appliance pretty much gave me back my ability to eat normally! I still have my days where my jaw and face hurt like you-know-what, but I can tell you I'm at least 85% better!!! PM me if you want more info.

Just because there isn't a cure for TMJ doesn't mean there aren't ways to make it a LOT better! You shouldn't have to live with unbearable levels of pain. We've been taught as a society that it's ok to live with pain, and IMHO, that's crap. I'm appalled that people think it's ok to live with this and deal with that! Bull, I say. Fix it, deal with it, search for more answers. Don't take NO for an answer. Find someone else who'll do something else for you!

*hugs* sweetie!

Jen

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help.

I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.
