Hi everyone.

I have TMJ and didn't realise other people did. Well I did but not as many.

I wear a gum shield on my bottom teeth and hopefully it will sort out.

I'm really giddy that I found a support group for it. haha.W00t

Hi Joely!

Welcome to the forum! Just an FYI, studies show that historically over 10,000,000 people are being treated for TMJ at any given time in the US alone. Recent reports indicate that this number may double in 2009 given the economic crisis. That's a lot of people for a condition hardly recognized and no standard treatment protocol! You are not alone!!!!

TMJ is a catch all diagnosis for conditions surrounding the temporomandibular joint. Please listen to your doctor and tell him if you are not finding any relief from the current protocol. Eat a soft diet to try and calm things down and apply moist heat when you feel it flaring up (Something as simple as bringing a washcloth with you to work to wet and microwave is helpful). Hopefully this will settle down for you soon.

Please ask questions. We have all been there!

Lisa

hello

wow I didn't realise there was that many people treated for it. Mine began with slight clicking, which then went to clicking everytime i opened my mouth and then the clicking started hurting so i tried not to open my mouth which quickly led to me not being able to open my mouth fully and it is still like that. hopefully the gum shield should start working but it was supposed to take a couple of months. i've had it for about a month now so hopefully will see results soon. I'm an Advocate

Hey Joely,

Sorry I missed welcoming you sooner, things have been a little rough for me. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble, but I hope that your gum shield will start working well soon. Are you taking any meds that help at all? It's hard to find any that help, I know that, but sometimes muscle relaxers can help relieve the pain for me, at least. Everyone's different, so it's hard, as Lisa mentioned, to find a "standard" treatment, but as she also said, there's sooooo many of us that have it! I'm glad you found us, and please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you out. Don't be shy!

I'm usually around, so if there is anything I can do, even if it's just point you in the right direction, please feel free to either post or send me a PM anytime!

*hugs*

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Joely,

That's great news! I'm so glad to hear it. It's awful when you can't, so I'm glad to hear that you must be feeling much better.

Keep us updated. *hugs*
