About a year ago I started having earaches and after being referred to an Otalaryngologist was diagnosed with TMJ. A second doctor confirmed it but the subsequent panoramic x-rays with dentist showed nothing. I really didn't believe it since my bite was okay, I didn't seem to have grinding problems and my jaw didn't hurt. A year later I continue to have the earaches on and off but now I definitely am having a problem with my jaw. Question is where do I go from here? Should I see a dentist?(no dental insurance), chiropractor, acupuncturist or some other specialty?

I've had Tmj as long as i can remember. No one caught it until it was very bad. i had surgery on both sides and wore a night guard for years. I saw a dentist who sorta specialized in tmj. and an oral surgon. stress was my biggest trigger for me. my mother-in-law was the biggest. we moved to another state and funny thing happened, the tmj got much better! I did change how and what i ate, nothing too chewy, no gum or taffy, no ice chips, ect. it may sound drastic to some people but it wasn't that difficult for me. Less pain!! It kills me to see people with tjm chewing on gum. I know a habit is a habit and they are hard to break but surgery on your face is NOT FUN.

You may want to locate a neuromuscular dentist even though your pan was clear. Moist heat, accupuncture and massage have been very helpful for me in dealing with the symptoms. Personally, I would not go the chiropractic route because my condition is so advanced and they have no training in TMJD.

What works for one, may or may not work for another. Trust your instincts and ask a lot of questions. TMJ is not a black and white disease.
