I have cut and paste this from the "Introductions" section of our forum. Let's continue this thread here:

Its somewhat reassuring to know that tinnitus drives other people as crazy as it drives me sometimes, though I would never wish it on anyone else.

I found this on then internet the other day:

www.detinnitiser.com

I asked my audiologist if its just a gimmick - he said there is a body of evidence that it might work for some people, so I think I will write away to see if I can get one sent to the other side of the worlds for me. Does anyone else know?

Good Morning Mazere!

Here are some sites giving a little bit more help/insight into the effect called residual inhibition:

http://stason.org/TULARC/health/body/tinnitus-ringing-ears/ 11-1-Residual-Inhibition.html

http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/ content~content=a779455348~db=all~jumptype=rss

http://www.experthearingsolutions.com/PDFs/RIT.pdf

Did you "do the math" on the cost of the detinnitser? The exchange from British Pounds to American Dollars goes like this: $48.81 for 2 CDs, $5.77 for shipping or, if you want to purchase the CDs and the box and headset (and receive free shipping) the complete package is $350.18.

Have you had your tinnitus matched? If so, have they attempted residual inhibition on you?

If you have not had any kind of testing to find out if you would benefit from residual inhibition, I would suggest keeping your money in your pockets until you do. The reason being, when case studies have been performed on tinnitus sufferers, the majority find that as soon as the "noise" is turned off, their tinnitus returns:

http://www.tinnitusarchive.org/dataSets/set-1/ tinnitusTestResults/residualInhibitionDuration

I would suggest that you have your tinnitus matched and a test for residual inhibition performed. Then, take a look at the links I have given to you here (the statistics) and decide then whether you want to spend $54.58 for 2 CDs or $350.18 for a CD player with infrared headphones and 2 CDs.

Thanks for all those references. Actually the cost of doing whatever it takes to get some relief is not the issue for me, but I will make an appointment to see my audiologist again next week. The local medical school is doing some research (so I have been told) so I might see if I can get into that as well. But I will certainly get my tinnitus matched (I presume that means trying to get an external sound that sounds the same as the ringing sounds) and ask about RIT. Thank you so much for that advice and information.

You are more than welcome.

Please understand that the reason behind making the monetary conversion for you was not to say that the system is expensive etc. I was wanting you to consider the fact that you are talking about a CD player, earphones and two CDs all of which (well, maybe not the cds, you can purchase for a whole lot less, here in the U.S.).

Also, remember the saying "Buyer Beware" and "You Get What You Pay For".

I am not opposed to trying anything and everything that sounds like it might work (I have tried many things myself) I just want everyone to be careful, cautious and make a well thought out decision.

Let me know what comes of your appointment (yes, tinnitus matching is an attempt at finding an external noise and volume similar to what you are hearing. It allows us to then turn around and test to see if residual inhibition might occur).

Thanks, and yes I will let you know. I am really hoping I can find a solution that gives at least temporary relief from time to time. Funnily I tend to forget the tinnitus when I am talking and amongst other people - I think the human voice masks it to some extent

Actually, it can. In fact, as long as the external noise you are listening too/concentrating on is louder than your internal noise, that is/can be the case.

In addition, there are a lot of people out there who only hear their tinnitus when they are trying to fall asleep (or if they try and concentrate on it during the day).

Yes - its interesting, but music doesnt block my tinnitus while human voices do. So when I am driving I listen to news and radio documentary rather than music. I miss my music too unless it is really loud

I have just joined this group and wonder about the kinds of internal noises everyone hears. Everytime I explain it to a dr, he hooks me up to an audiology machine and then tells me that I am going deaf in a certain range and it's due to aging. I know all that! I want to know how and if it can be stopped. I have ringing in both ears, sometimes at two different notes. I get the feeling that someone has slapped a hand over my right ear, stopping the sound in it. I also have a sound like soda fizzing in a can. Once in a while, and it's not very often, the tinnitus stops altogether and that really scares me. Does anyone have any advice or clues as to what's going on?

Welcome to the site Sistrozzie!!!!

Sorry to hear about your frustration with your Tinnitus.

I am an Audiologist who has been in practice for over 13 years. I am also the group leader here.

Allow me to ask you a few questions so that I might be able to give you some answers.

First of all, how long have you been suffering with tinnitus? How long have you known about the hearing loss? Have you worked or recreationed around loud noise? Have you worn ear protection, when around loud noise? Is your hearing loss about the same in both ears?

Let's start with that and see what I can come up with for you.

I am glad to have found this group, too. I have had tinnitis for many, many years, although when I first got it, I don't know. I hear layers upon layers of tinny, high-pitched whining. It is like a chorus of the type of sound your TV might make once in awhile, and it's in both ears. I don't know if it's because of lots of ear infections, or work-related???

I do know that when I mention it to my doctors as a problem for me, they don't care and don't regard it as anything serious that I need to do anything about. Actually, I would give anything for a few moments of REAL quiet. I hear it all the time, 24 hours a day. I can ignore it most of the time, but have to always have, at a minimum, some white noise in order to do that.

I found an article a long time ago, that mentioned "killing" some of the nerves that are firing and causing the ringing. I will see if I can find it again and post a link. I think I just might see an audiologist, now that I have read a few posts here.

HI - I also have tinnitus and wrote into the group a few months ago about it. Mother of Boys suggested having the sounds matched which I did, but in itself it didnt give me much of a way forward. However I have started taking 3mg of melatonin at nights and it has had a major effect - I sleep better and the tinnitus is less intense during the days - I even have some periods of silence though the noises all eventually come back. Thanks to everyone who has contributed their thoughts - I really appreciate them!
