Alright everybody. I had soooo much fun last year hearing everyone's Thanksgiving Holiday plans and your menus!!!! It was so much fun talking throughout the menu planning/preparation (thawing those turkeys vs fresh ones!!! lol) and the actual holiday!!! I loved hearing it all!!!

This year I was expecting 15 folks to be here, but my oldest daughter and her clan can't make it, so I was sort of disappointed UNTIL my youngest daughter and her hubby, and daughter, and his mother are going to come for Thanksgiving and my middle daughter and her family too. Now there will be 9 people. Hooray still!

Some of them are arriving this weekend with the remainder coming in on Tuesday night. We're gonna have some fun!!!!

Tentative menu:

Turkey with dressing/gravy/cranberry sauce or chutney

Green beans

Sweet Potatoes

Homemade Raviolis

Deviled Eggs

Some sort of salad

Homemade Yeast Rolls

Pumpkin/Pecan/Cherry Pies

That's enough, but I may think of something else. What are you folks doing for the holiday?

YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT!!!! IF I DID...ANYONE CAN.

It's very soon after my fiance's rage episode and the subsequent "finding out" he has BD. After what I now know about stress triggers, I would cancel altogether...except my mom is going into surgery and she really wants to see the family together.

So I've done what I can to simplify. I'm ordering the turkey instead of making it. I'm making stuffing and potatoes, but have doled out the rest of the menu to understanding family members. It WILL be a fantastic feast:

Cajun Turkey (I'm ordering this from a local BBQ joint)

Dirty-Rice Stuffing

Cajun corn bread stuffing

Roasted Turnips, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, and Dried Cranberries

Broccoli With Dijon Vinaigrette

Sauteed Green Beans and Onions With Bacon

Jalapeno Corn Bread

Classic Sweet Potato Pie

Pumpkin-Streusel Cheesecake

I'm a huge fan of Cooking Light's Thanksgiving menus - these dishes all came from the site.

Smile

All of your dinner plans sound so good that I'm almost embarrassed to admit this: we decided to go out to dinner for Thanksgiving. I criticized my MIL when she did this 15 years ago . . . what goes around comes around! Smile I'm not a great cook, so this is not a big concession for me to make for his sanity.

Hubby has been so blue lately he can't handle any extra stress or pressure, so I think we'll give the post-Thanksgiving family pie party a pass this year, and I'll just fix a small Thanksgiving dinner for the 2 of us next Sunday. I did come across a cranberry relish that I'm dying to make, so we'll have turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, and potatoes and gravy. Plus pumpkin pie and a cranberry pie for dessert. Who knows, by then he might want to have "those people" (our children) over for pies. That's what he says when he's stressed about being around the family: "Why do we have to have those people over?" Have to laugh or I'd cry . . . Ahh, the joys of having bp in the family . . .

I don't have a lot of wiggle room on my menu because everybody demands that I make my "hits." So I have to make....

Turkey, sausage dressing, mashed potatoes, shitake mushroom herb gravy, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry relish, and rolls.

The only flexibility I have is with my veggies or with varying a recipe a little bit. Like this year, I THINK (not decided for sure) that I am gonna NOT do a cornbread dressing but a sourdough dressing. I MIGHT add apples to it.

Last year, I got a squash casserole recipe from Lollipop that was YUMMY.

I might try that.

I was also thinking about brussel sprouts...creamed spinach....asparagus...

(My husband won't eat ANY of these. He is PICKY about vegetables. Eats about 6 different kinds.)

My main tricks for holiday cooking: (Martha Stewart, don't steal my ideas!)

1. I place rosemary (fresh), chopped oranges, and chopped onions in my turkey cavity to flavor my turkey and to keep it moist.

2. I do as much as I can in advance! This includes even chopping things up but most especially includes my gravy stock, which I start three days ahead. I take chicken broth and put in celery, onion, carrots, and a ton of herbs, and I cook it down, add more stock, cook it down, add more stock, etc etc.

For dessert, one of my guests brings a cake from a Chinese bakery that is SOOO good, and I bake one thing (thinking of apple pie or gingerbread...).

All of my advice is based on experience and reading. I am not a medical doctor, and have never even played one on TV.

mine is as usual, turkey (jenni-o), cornbread stuffing, creamed cheese corn, green bean casserole, yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie for dessert, and of course my cranberry, apple, pineapple, jello salad. i do as much chopping etc beforehand too, it is pretty stress free and there will be 7 of us so far.

It isn't my husband's fault he has an illness. It is his responsibility on how he treats it so he doesn't hurt others or himself in the midst of it.

My opinion, is just that, I am here to share my experience, strength and hope to those whose lives have been affected by this disorder :)

I'm not sure of my plans, just yet. I would really like to go visit family, although I'm scheduled for my holiday time with the kids for Christmas, I may just switch with the ex, to maximize it all for everyone. My mother may not be very happy, though.

If I stay home, I'll make a feast here, like I did last year. And Christmas...I just don't even know right now. lol.

So, if we stay home:

Turkey

Cranberry-Apple pie

I have to have turnip greens.

I made sausage balls for breakfast last year, which is credited to this group. I might make something a little lighter, this year. lol.

Um...I might take input from the kids. lol. They'll want to do cookie cut-outs, I'm sure. I really want to put up the tree... Not that we'll be EATING the tree or anything...

Man, more and more, I just want to stay home. lol. Eff traveling and having no time...

ETA: of course dressing, and lots and lots of green bean casserole. I know the kids won't be happy unless there is some. lol

Everyone's menu's sound great. I love Thanksgiving, all the food and spending time with family.

We are still in the air about what we are doing. Hubby really wants to go to his brothers house but our oldest really wants me to do it here, seeing how it will be the last holiday in this house.

I will vouch for married's turkey recipe (oranges and onions inside the turkey and fresh spices under the skin), I made it last year and it came out so juicy and yummy. Last year I also made the sausage rolls that we talked about on here, with bisquick and cheese. I am gonna make those again this year even if I am just taking them to BIL's. Last year they came out a little dry, I used really lean sausage, this year gonna go for the full fat kind and hope they turn out a little more moist, they will make a great snack while everyone is waiting for the full feast.

Swen, I also would like the Acorn Squash-Wild Rice Pilaf recipe it sounds great!!

Our oldest loves to make pumpkin bars for Thanksgiving, so I will at least get him the stuff to do that. ( his is an awesome baker)

Thanks for starting this thread lolli, I forgot how much fun we had last year with this. I can't wait to start cooking.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
