Hey all. On completely different side note, I've been sick for the past few days. Last night I've been coughing for the half the night and today I have a really bad sore throat. Anyone know any other home remedies to aid sore throats, because that's what's really bothering me right now. >.< And all of this before finals too...

Sorry you're sick, Mikata. Try hot lemonade or tea with lemon and honey. I've even tried plain honey.

The dr. suggested gargling with salt water. I never tried it.

If you are coughing a lot, it really helps to just take some cough suppressant so you can get some sleep.

Hope you feel better soon!

Here's a couple of old-timer remedies my granny use to do for us:

For sore throat:

One cup of very hot water, sqeeze 1/2 lemon in it, and 2 TBS honey...mix and sip while it is still hot. My granny says the hot water is to soothe the throat, the lemon is citrus, and the honey kills bacteria in your mouth and throat.

For fever with a cold:

2/3 cup very hot water, couple of TBS whiskey or any bourbon, juice of 1/2 lemon, 2 TBS honey, and a piece of peppermint in it. (Cough syrups usually have alcohol, too) This is tasty and the steam off it makes your sinus open up. It usually helps you sleep and you will sweat and break the fever. And if it doesn't help too much, at least you won't care after drinking this....Wink Also, you should only drink these Hot Toddy's no more than every 4 hours. Drink lots of water too when running a fever or with a cold.

YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT!!!! IF I DID...ANYONE CAN.

Mikata, I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I am a firm believer in Sudafed (during the day) and antihistamines at night. But these have side effects not everybody can bear.

For opening your nose:

Wasabi or jalapenos.

Green tea with lemon and honey. (I can't stand ginger in my tea, but ginger is a natural remedy for many things. If you like ginger, then add ginger.)

Chicken broth, very hot.

A very hot and long shower or bath.

Easing a sore throat: lozenges. (LOL) Lemon, green tea, honey. I have gargled with salt water too. I don't know if it helped, but it was something to do other than think about my sore throat.

I also drink a ton of herbal tea--it has high vitamin C content (the Zinger teas in the supermarket will do as well as my favorites from my online tea store).

Avoid milk products.

And get lots of sleep and drink plenty of non-caffeinated beverages--water and green tea are the best!

Good luck on your exams!

All of my advice is based on experience and reading. I am not a medical doctor, and have never even played one on TV.

So I think what I'm lacking is the rest part. xD But I'm working on it since my final is kind of on Tuesday and I'm still feeling miserable. But I asked my roommate for Dayquil, which I don't take often...but kind of just want to stop feeling sick at least for a little while. ^^;

Yes, Mikata, if I were you, I would keep Dayquil on board until your finals are over. Hopefully it won't make your brain fuzzy!

Honey lemon tea, alternating with a salty broth. Also, try to alternate cool liquids with hot. Try not to go too cold, especially if you're running a temperature.

Just to clarify:

Heat kills bacteria, acid kills bacteria, sugar kills bacteria, salt kills bacteria. lol

Cold gets WATER to the cells a little bit faster, and you need lots of water with a cold.

Lots of liquids thin your secretions, which aids in productive coughs and clearing of the sinuses. Try to only take remedies to get you through your sleep cycle and special times, like the actual exam. Try not to stay on the cough meds for long. They're only indicated for 7 days, anyway, so try to maximize their use. Take hot showers/baths to sooth your body. For headache, try to press up on your occiput, the bone on the back of your skull, to relieve pressure. I don't know effectiveness for migraine, but it helps with sinus headaches.

Don't overdo it, but orange juice is really good for a pick-me-up, providing citric acid for the energy-producing Krebs cycle. Simple carbs, in conjunction with some light use of more complex carbs can provide you with some energy, as well, and be tolerated by the stomach, while you're sick. If you can eat more complete meals, obviously that's a little better, but just don't overdo that.

I hope you get well, soon!
