Shingles on calf

My husband is now in the post herpetic neuralgia phase of Shingles. The lesions were all on his calf and now he is having trouble walking. He has tolerable pain while sitting with his leg elevated, but as soon as he gets up and tries to walk, the pain becomes almost unbearable and to make things worse he not only has muscle spasms but nerve spasms as well. Has anyone else out there had Shingles on the calf and if so, was there anything you found that helped lessen the pain?
