I had an L5S1 discectomy in 2002 from an injury that was unsuccessful. Paralysis and lots of pain still. Now I have lots of bulging discs and stenosis in other areas. Am considering a laminectomy in L45. Does anyone know if the stenosis can come back after laminectomy? Or with time? Do you think a good idea?

HI CW. Have you been in that much pain since the surgery or did it get better?

I had similar surgery in 2002. Didn't help me much either. After 3 years, I was back doing most of what I liked with only moderate back pain and no sciatica. I reinjured my back in May and now the sciatica is back. I'm finally going to get cortizone shots on Wed. Not happy with my Doc for taking so long.

Don't know if stenosis will come back with time. What other therapies have you tried? Probably everything.

If the cortizone shots don't help I may try the lysis of adhesiions, and anything and everything else before letting them cut me again. I would look for a doctor in your area who could perform the operation endoscopically. I live in upstate NY and can't find one.

Hi crazyw

I have had two lami/discectomies at L5/S1. One in March 2007 and the second in August 2008. I did great after the first surgery for 16 months and then somehow the disc ruptured again last July. I have yet to feel better from the second surgery. My OS still has not "released" me from the second surgery. I went and got a second opinion from another OS on Thursday. He said that I have nerve damage from the second laminectomy, thus the horrible sciatica I am not sure about the stenosis, I have spondylolisthesis and now disc bulges at L3 and L4. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk further! Good luck to you!
