I am new here, but as wondering if Scheuerman's disease is common in other' families?

Me Grandfather -->mother --> me --> my son, a nephew.

I did not know my grandfather, but my mother's Scheueman's had a worse effect on her than mine with my son being less effected than me.

Is there generally a tendency for Scheueman's to run in families?

hi Jenny

i ma really sorry but i dont know the answer to that one, i havent ever heard of it, no one else in my family has it! (arent they lucky? they have no idea what i have endured...) i guess the only way to fins out if that is so is for others to answer as well, i msut say though how unlucky of your family to have it in every generation...

I am so sorry for you all, i guess the only positive is that you each understand how bad it can get...

try to support each other and care for each other at least you know how they feel..

if you should find out that more families share this curse please let us know...

hugs to you

Actually Cinderella, I had a quick Google search for Sh(can't spell it - very bad spelling all my life ie dyslexia) and did not find much at all about it.

I wll later do a serach for clinical trials which may have some mention of it in them.

(a bit sore, as am pretty sure I have broken something in my tail bone - too sore as yet to go to the doctor and sit in the uncomfortable chairs there)

And cannot sit in this chair for too long, but have another computer ie an Acer in the lounge will use that latter when sitting in a comfortabe chair.

All the best,

Jenny

Ah...Ah found something re the genetics of Scheuermann's although there is more. They appear to be doing work re the genes which may have something to do with Scheueermann'sConclusions:

.

"In a large cohort of twins that included almost 35,000 individuals, the self-reported overall prevalence of Scheuermann disease was 2.8% and the male-to-female ratio was close to 2:1. Because the pairwise and probandwise concordance and the odds ratio were two to three times higher in monozygotic than in dizygotic twins and the heritability was high, we concluded that there is a major genetic contribution to the etiology of Scheuermann disease"

.

Prevalence, Concordance, and Heritability of Scheuermann Kyphosis Based on a Study of Twins Frank Damborg, MD1, Vilhelm Engell, MD1, Mikkel Andersen, MD1, Kirsten Ohm Kyvik, MD, PhD2 and Karsten Thomsen, MD, DMSc1 The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American

). 2006;88:2133-2136.

monozygotic - same egg - egg divides to make two kids

dizygotic - each kid with its own egg

The sugeon who just worked on me said yes there is evidence of genetics trends. Looking back at pictures of my grandma I can tell she had it. My dad looks like he has a slight case...but like most genetics things it can skip people depending on how many alleles control the gene or if it is recessive or deominant.
