It's good for us to get exercise and keep our joints in use and as limber as we can. I thought since our members could all chip in and discuss what you do to exercise despite having R.A. What kind of exercises do you find easiest on your joints? Do you still try and exercise even during a flare-up? Share with us how you cope. Thanks!

I try and do walking, I have to use my cane most of the time. I have a large backyard, so I have places along the way where I can walk and if I get tired sit and rest a moment or two. I try to do it despite having a flare-up even though I probably have to take a nap afterwards lol.

For other exercises I use my cane and do stretches. I hold one end of the cane in each hand and do a series of stretches side to side, back over my shoulders, and movements like that. I find that I cannot move my arms and shoulders to get full range of motion when I do it without the cane. But with the gentleness of some added push and resistance I can do it easier.

For my hands I do typing. When I wake up in the morning it's all I can do to hold my spoon for breakfast most of the time. I flip on my computer and do some typing which seems to help loosen them up some. I can't hold a pen, because it's hard to grip, but for some reason when you're typing your fingers are more extended (rather than curled around a pen, spoon, whatever) and it seems to give more movement.

So what kinds of things do you do to keep joints moving and active?

Hi JoyfulOne,

I enjoy knitting, crocheting, and quilting and will do them while watching TV at night, even if a flare is starting it helps to keep my hands from freezing up. I've found that keeping them in an upright position while knitting can reduce the swelling. I just put it down when the pain becomes too great.

I haven't found much I can do when I get a flare in my feet as it hurts so bad I can't walk, but when I'm not flaring I enjoy gardening and walking. I've found my knees and hips stiffen up if I sit to long so I make sure to bend my legs at the knee even when sitting. And try to stand up every 20-30 minutes or so.

There are times as well, where I get flares so bad that everything hurts and I've found with these it's just best to rest. My rheumy said "if it hurts, don't do it" and until I can receive meds for my RA I'm listening to her.

Hi OutofRheum~ Welcome to the group and thanks for your reply. I will have to try and do what you said about keeping the hands in an upright while doing my handwork. I crochet, and I my basket is just sitting there waiting because it bothers me too much to hold my hooks. Maybe I should pick it up again and see if that helps some. I know exercize is good for my fingers, but too often I just give up with it. Maybe the trick IS keeping them up higher. Just curious...do you rest your wrists on a pillow or anything to support them?

That's a good point you make about making sure to change positions and move the knees every 20 minutes or so, and to stand up. I try and do that when I'm sitting at the computer. It's a good habit to get in to! I also do gardening, but not as much as I used to. I used to keep up great (with the weeding) but I find it harder to do anymore. I could hoe, as that would be easier on the fingers, but that only knocks off the tops of the weeds and doesn't always kill the roots. Still...I enjoy my gardening!

Wise advice from your rheum: "if it hurts, don't do it." I used to believe in the 'no pain, no gain' theory, now I see that it's counterproductive lol. Flare-ups are no fun, to be sure! Have a wonderful and pain free day! Joy

Hi JoyfulOne,

I usually put a clean soft towel (folded a couple times) under my elbows while knitting or crocheting. Just go slow to start, if you can only do a few stitches at least you accomplished something, put it down and try again in a few minutes, try not to get upset with it and just realize that this (and everything else for us) will take a little longer.

Hang in there, I hope you have a nice weekend!

I exercised at the LA fitness. I get on the treadmill and or bicyle for about 15 to 30min. depending if that is my day to do aerobics and weights workout. Sometimes I just bike for 30min. Other times, I do water aerobics for 45min. I do good most of the time when I go but I don't go every day when I like to. Although, I do know this that the more you exercise your joints like that, it keeps your body and joints more lubricated. So I've become stronger over the past year.

When I was little my mom would force me to move through the pain, so I have a strong mind set that movement is good. The movements don't have to be much to help. I find the longer I sit still the more pain I have. I love to sew and crochet and do that inspite of the pain, I love to soak in the tub or go to the swimming pool if the pain is too bad. When I'm not in pain, which hasn't been often latly, I like to wall climb or go to kickboxing but those are down to once every month or two now. I have signed up for a morning Yoga class starting in November so I hope that helps some. Growing uo I used to "Grin and bear it" in an attempt to counter my 'weakness' but now I see it as "do what I can" because any movement is good.

Hope every one has a good weekend.

I just got a new DVd workout for arthritis pain and on good days it is eary to do it is not the typical workout dvd it helps with range of motion it does have a couple of exercises that use resistant bands and a couple of stretching on the floor but it is slow paced and like i said on good days easy to do. On the days when my legs are bothering me I just do the exercises the have with you sitting in the chair. I also do crocheting and my 5 kids keep me more active than I want to be at times. the youngest is 21 months and some days I think he is the reson i do not just lay down and give up. My aunt also has RA and she loves doing water exercises says it has helped her for years.

Momof5, that sounds really good. I wasn't aware there was a workout tape for arthritis sufferers. Where did you find it?

I have other physical problems besides the ra, and I need exercises that can be done sitting down. I walk with a cane because the legs are so bad and tire easily. If I do too much walking, then the lymphedema kicks in and I get all swollen up from the chest down, which raises my blood pressure ridiculously high. Too much walking, etc, and the legs give out and I fall down lol. I'm thinking maybe chair exercises might be the way to go.

Cool!! Thank you SO much for the link and mentioning the price. Funny, I used to get more than my fair share of excercing every day (farming & nursing) and now it's about all I can do to get some exercise that's more gentle. I've gone from jogging 2 miles a day to walking with a cane. Looking forwards to checking this out! Thank you!!!! Joy
