my daughter's husband bought her an expensive kindle. She did not want one much less one of this price.

She tried to explain to him her love of actual books. How she likes the sight, smell, feel, and trading with friends.

He only thought about how she loves to read. The gift was thoughtful, but is rarely used.

I love books, too. But I love reading...

Yes, I'm lucky to be able again to hold books if they're not big hard covers. The few weeks I couldn't hold a book, I propped it up, used an ereader, anything to keep reading. I needed the escape even more then.. No books was bad. No reading was unthinkable.

We all must choose our compromises.

I love to read!!!! Have you ever put your book, hard covers work best, on the table tilled just right then all you have to do is turn the pages. I have a ereader and i even do that with the ereader, because holding that is no better then holding a softcover book. I have even managed to prop my ereader on my steering wheel of my van just right so I can read at work during my lunch.... no not to drive and read LOL. My daughter has gotten me a little stand for my ereader that works well for the table now.

I stopped reading for a long time due to RA flare. When that got better my neck started flaring and has not stopped. This from CD and ruptured discs. It took me along time, knowing that reading was causing neck pain and eye pain to worsen. Even then I did not give it up. I loved it to much and had little else to occupy my day. So I would read and then suffer with nerve eye pain and a migraine for 2 or 3 days. I broke down and bought a Kindle. I do not read very often even with that. I do use a decorative plate stand that the kindle can stand in stacked on some small boxes to rasie it even further, but sitting in a chair so I can read at eye level causes pain just holding my head up to long. It is that slight tilt of the neck while reading that causes instant pain and then using the eye muscles can set off the trigeminal nerve pain. My head pulls back and up from the CD. Trying to force my neck into normal postions is painful and cause flares. I tried the Kindle on speech and just can't enjoy it. It is not the same as beng curled up with a good book. I think most of my problem is that I have lost so much and now I am just aggravated at losing something as simple as reading and listening is just not the same as reading the words yourself. I will probably get desperate at some point and do the speech books. Maybe i'll surprise myself and get used to it.
