Hi everyone,

Just got home from a long day away and I'm exhausted. I'll be logging in again tomorrow. But I have a problem and wondered if this has happened to others with RA or on Methotrexate or vitamin deficient or ... or... lol

Ate at an Indian restaurant for a late lunch and ate lamb chops. They tasted so salty to me I could hardly stand it. Tasted like lamb rubbed in salt. Or like I just ate a spoonful of salt. Hubby said they weren't at all salty to him.

Then we finally got home and nuked us a couple of cheddar brats. It was way too salty to me. Now this is something we eat often. I don't recall the salty taste.

I was thinking maybe some dehydration, but I drank water and iced tea before we ate. And then more water on the way home.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

thanks {{{gentle hugs to all who would like them}}}

I know that when I was on Chemo I became sensitive to the salt taste. So, it is conceivable that the RA meds could make that happen to you. I don't think it's anything to worry about, so you can wait until you see you Rheumy again and just mention it.

have a good weekend.

I've become very sensitive to salty taste as well. It is not pleasant. It does taste as though someone dumped a whole bottle of salt on some things, even though none has necessarily been added. It also makes me drink water like a camel going on a long trip through the desert!! ( you DID notice that hump on my back, right? Laughing )

Hmmm. This is so interesting (and must be so annoying!). Have you guys read about it somewhere to know what might cause it? Is it all food or just some?

I have taken 2 meds that changed the taste of food. The first one made EVERTHING with sugar in it taste like dirt. The second one made things sooo salty it tasted like a bottle of salt dumped in it.

The "sugar/dirt" taste came from after-effects of a med used in the hospital after major surgery. I bet I lost 20 lbs because I could not eat or drink anything with sugar for weeks. Believe me I tried but couldn't handle eating or drinking dirt.

The "salty" taste came from Levequin and lasted for a week or more. Note: This had never happened with Levequin before.

Ask your druggist about taste changes and meds. I bet you will make the connection.

Good luck.

Hi Paulette, I was wondering if it wasn't the mtx. I looked up vit D deficiency and don't see anything about salty at the Mayo site or elsewhere. I hope you have a good weekend, too. I got 14 hours of sleep last night so maybe I will too. The parts I'm awake for lol.

Karen, you and me, both, then, although this is the first time I've had the salty problem. Maybe it's the mtx. But on water - have been in the habit for several years of bringing a bottle of water with me wherever I go due to very infrequent but excruciating esophageal spasms. Lately I bring a couple of bottles with me in the car and I'm sucking down icy water and Crystal light all day long at home.

Cata, don't know. Didn't find anything through a quick search last night. I'll look more today. And bits' idea about calling the pharmacist is a good idea.

bits, wow. I looked up levaquin and it appears to have some really serious side effects. A few ppl mention salty taste. I hope that was the worst you experienced from it:

I don't eat sugar at all, but do eat sucralose, Stevia, and Nutrasweet. No change at all with this. Just a lot of salty where there is none.

I will look it up and call the pharmacist and let you guys know what I find if anything. Will mention it to my celebrity doctor when I see him in a few weeks. lol

Thanks guys.
