I was diagnosed about three months ago and was fortunate enough to get into a Rheumatogist fairly quickly. I am on 20 mg of Methotrexate and 10 mg of Prednisone now. Everytime I try to titrate off the the Predisone I end up taking several days off from work because I can't walk very well, which, in my line of work, is a real detriment. At my last visit to my Rheumatologist, she gave me pamplets on Humira and Embrel and told me I would be moving on to one of these meds if there is no significant progress with my current treatment plan. Due to insurance requirments I will have to suffer through 8 more weeks of my current meds. I was wondering what the experiences where with Humira and Enbrel, side effects, effectiveness, how hard is it to inject yourself (I hate needles), etc.

Your situation is very similar to my own except I was switched to Arrave because of side effects of Methotrexate. I also have problems trying to cut back on the prednisone for the very same reasons. I know of one person is taking Humira with limited results and she has a daughter do the injections every two weeks. What I understood from my Dr. was that these two have been proven to limit the joint damage from inflammation, that may or may not help with all of the pain & fatigue. All you can do is try. kkite

I'm also on Arave and Prednisone. Cutting back prednisone haven't been possible, but at least i am on a low dose (5mg). I know people taking Humira and Enbrel with amazing results, reducing pain, fatigue, and long term damage, but also people that have had no results with Humira. I think Enbrel tends to be effective. Side effects are similar to methrotexate. The down side is it is a new drug with no long-term studies. Keep in mind methrotexate takes weeks, even months to work, when it does. It works for many people (it didn't for me, though). With RA it is a matter of try and try until you find your perfect match. Good luck!
