We have discussed this in many posts, but I thought that it deserved one of it's own.

My doctors all say that this is a very important thing for those of us who have RSD. I'm not sure about those with actual nerve damage, please let me know about that.

Is everyone trying to desensitize? What are your methods?

When my legs hurt, I automatically rub them and have noticed that they are less sensitive than my feet. So, I have started rubbing my feet more. After a shower, I can't touch my feet, so I admit that I don't do much then. I'm hoping to work up to that.

Hi Lazy

I'm often trying to desensitize. When I begin the program I'll be doing it there also. At home I use a rough wash cloth. Like one dried on a line instead of a dryer. I briskly swipe it back and forth against the sensitive skin of the top of my right foot and my right calf. I've began moving higher up my thigh to fix it before it gets out of hand like the other parts. I also swipe my leg and foot back and forth on the bed sheets the best that I can. I often sleep with my foot hanging off the bed because the bed hurts. I just can't get into a comfortable non painful position.

It is very important to desensitize. Even with the nerve damage that I have it's important for me to continue doing so. I haven't worn shoes for years and when I'm forced to because of rain, I try not to go anywhere, but really I shouldnt do that it just makes it worse the next time.

Wishing you a pain eased day,

~Twinkle

Lazy, I constantly try to desensitise my hand and arm. To different types of tectures of materials. And I think it helps when I have to have something on,like a jacket or coat. I have took out the hem on some jackets so it will cover my hand.

My right hand, arm shoulder have nerve damage. I have absolutely no feeling; can not even feel what position the hand is in and whether it is holding a object. Yet it hurts all the time and often burns, something you all can relate to. Doing desensitivation training has no effect on this limb, as I have no sensitivity in it now.

My feet and legs have no nerve damage that I know of. I also cannot wear shoes or socks nor have anything touch my feet without extreme pain. I am still trying to desensitive them, so far with little effect. I do use the training with more effect on my upper and lower legs. I hope to be abl to slow the progress of RSD through this, as I did in my right hand and arm. It took 7 years for the disease to cripple that limb and the Pain Doc attributes that to occupational therapy, exercise and desensitivation training.

I try to desensitize my feet by forcing myself to wear shoes for at least part of the day, touching them or letting my PT do hands on with them, rubbing things with different textures against it (cloth, tennis ball, etc.)

I use an empty two liter and sit it on the floor and roll it back and forth under my feet to desensitize. My specialist told me to master that first then he will have me move on to another thing... The cat loves it cause I put a bell in it just to drive him nuts! lol

HI.... I can not stand things on my right hand or arm.... but I will wear gloves to just to do the desensitiving of the hand...... I hate it when it rains... it feels like million lit cigarettes hitting my hand and arm..... I also use one of those dish scrubbies on my hand in the shower...... cause a shower is murder on my hand and arm...... and it seems to really help.... get through the shower....

Hello All;

This is something that alot of my doctors have asked me to try alsowhile getting my degreethis was a method that was used with several things as well as pain. Yes, texture is good to try as well as maybe tempture and some light presure and even just simple touch or message by family member or close friend as you don't want a heavey handed person. Just a thought but it did help my left hand and arm.

I like the feel of sand on my feet, I think next time I go to the beach I will bring a big bucket load of it back then when Im sitting with my coffee and cookies I will stick my feet in the sand it just feels so good.

Hi lady hane- its funny that you mentioned that because i just did that- sat at the beach with my feet in the sand. Also, i went to the dead sea which is supposed to be very healthy and took back some salt from there and soaked my feet in it. the warm water at the beach actually felt good to which suprised me because my feet are not big fans of water.
