I have RSD in my feet - my right foot especially bad. My pain management doctor says that the best thing I can do is to "walk through the pain". Now, I can walk barefoot without too many problems. With shoes, I just can't walk without excrutiating pain. You know, the sharp, shooting, electric-type, bring you to your knees pain. In his mind the best thing for me to do is to put on my shoes and walk, walk, walk.

Is his right or is he crazy?

thanks!

HI....I would ask him to lay down in the parking lot and you run over him and then ask him to walk off the pain...( I saw this same answer written on the fibro site....) but it is the same thing.... I was told that I was to rub sand paper over my hand to get me use to the pain.... but... it never worked...........

I think you can only do what you can do........

Lchayim,

Dr. Kirkpatrick told me the same thing you need to walk. The saying Use it or Lose it. was used alot. You know your body you know the difference between your normal pain the bring you to your knees pain.. So walka little bit not a a whole mile or anything but try maybe walking a half a block or from your front door to your car.. Take baby steps with this. I go to the mall and walk from my favorite store to another one and sit and rest then do it to another store. It has worked for me and everyone is different.. But I have been able to keep it at bay and not spread my staying active.

Its worth a shot you have nothing to lose. If someone recommends something I at least try it.

Robin

You know I agree with the if you don't use it you lose it... but its easier said than done..... I was told I would never walk again without a brace and a cane..... I walked...I even jogged.... I was told I would lose the use of my right hand..... and again I didn't.... because I used it..... because I pushed....... I used it... but the doctors seem to think it is easy..... it hurt... it really hurt..... and then the doctors try and take all the credit..... and they did little to nothing...... except charge me and my insurance co a ton....

And I have my own opinion on Dr Kirkpatrick....

any way.... you are right about the losing it if you don't use it

Well, I do use it...I walk around my house without shoes, so I do walk on it everyday. It's only when I go out and I wear shoes that I don't walk on it and need a wheelchair. (I used crutches for months until my back couldn't stand it any longer.) So it's not like I'm not using it at all. He just thinks I should push myself beyond walking without shoes. I'm not sure why when I am walking on my foot everyday as is.

He probably wants you to push yourself even harder..lol He has seen your progress that you have made and thinks if you push harder you will get better results. All I can say is take it day by day. Everybody can give you feedback and tell youwhat works for them but you know your own body and you know how far you can push yourself. I've learned I can make more progress in a hot tub minus the jets. To mee that works better than walking. For others that doesnt work heck even walking for others doesnt work. It just up to you and your body.

Hello, I too have RSD in the right foot and ankle. I was given the same advice from my PT. I have also tried to walk it off, now that just was not possible. I am the outside type of person, so this has really slowed down and changed my life, but I still manage to get outside and try to get as much time on my feet as posible, however it is usually limited to 6-7 hours max (with a number of rests), then the ice pick and knife get worse than the blow torch and I have to go inside. Do you use any herbs to treat your RSD? IF so, please let me know. Best Wishes
