Hey everyone,

First of all, I was just wondering if there was anyone in this support group from Canada? I'm writing from Atlantic Canada, and was wondering what type of specialist one would need to see if they suspected they had RDS?

FYI, I'm actually writing on behalf of my grandmother who is in her early 60's. She has not yet been diagnosed with RDS, but she has seen numerous doctors who are having a hard time diagnosing her condition. One particular doctor mentioned the possibility of RDS briefly, but diagnosis of this condition did not proceeed.

The more I read about RDS, the more I'm convinced that this is what she has. Incidentally, shortly before the onset of her severe arm pain (which starting near her elbow), she had a routine flu shot in her affected arm. During my reading I discovered that RDS can rarely be triggered by venipuncture which caused me concern because she has been gradually losing functioning of her entire right arm over the past three years (shortly after the shot).

After recently visiting an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the upper extremeties my grandmother was referred to a neurologist who won't be able to see her until Sept. 12/08. Since she's likely in the third stages of RDS (if this is the case), I'm thinking waiting another 6 months could cause even further deterioration of her arm. I wish I knew what to do to help her!

Anyway, that's my introduction!

Heather

Thanks Robin

She has pain in and around her elbow radiating down into her hand. Her hand also throbs off and on, not every day but often. Sometimes she gets pain in her right shoulder which may be secondary to the new way in which she has to move her right arm. Her arm is stuck in a bent position, and if she accidentally hits her hand or arm, even ever so gently, she becomes overcome with extreme pain.

She takes Lyrica at a dose of 1 pill twice a day although her doctor recommended a dose of 2 pills twice a day -- which sometimes helps with the pain but often doesn't. And she doesn't actively do any kind of physical therapy as far as I know (probably due to pain) even though she has seen a therapist. They did give her a brace to wear which she does wear off and on. (Perhaps a few times a week).

I have seen a site which I believe focuses on Dr. Hooshmand and his work, but I haven't heard of Dr. Kirkpatrick. I'll have to google him!

It's funny that you're writing from Florida because my grandmothers Mom is living down there in Valrico!

I do know with Lyrica the Dr.'s say it needs to be taken at a higher dose in order for it to be effective. Granted with that said I know it can make you very sick I know this from expereince. I know that Dr. Kirkpatrick had me in physical therapy 4 times a week. The saying "Use it or lose it" is said alot in his office. She honestly might try to get in to see Kirkpatrick and if she cant she might want to see Dr. Hashmi he worked with Dr. Hooshmand for 12 years before Hooshmand retired. At least she can get a different opinion on what is goign on and possibly they can direct her to someone else. Hope some of this might help you.

Robin

Hi Heather, you might read RSD Canada. They are in Ontario. You may pick up a friend or two that understands the Canadian system of medicine. Its hard for us here in the USA to understand why it takes 6 months to see a doctor. The RSD however is the same no matter where you are. I think it may good news for your grandmother is the pain comes and goes. That will indicate that it is not RSD and maybe there is something else nerologically going on. RSD pain is constant. You may want to investigate further with your grandmother as to the skin condition on thre arm where the pain is. Does the color change or is the temperature elevated in that area? Is the pain like a burning sensation or a deep muscle type pain? These questions may help narrow down the diagnosis of her condition. Best Wishes
