I’ve always been on the opinion that prevention is best tool in fighting disease, and facing our health challenges. You can’t really achieve prevention without proper education and awareness.

Many people never heard of PAH, or mistake it for high blood pressure. Well, I’ve found a nice explanation for it, provided by The Pulmonary Hypertension Association – Pulmonary Hypertension is... the other high blood pressure. The common high blood pressure is in the left side of the heart (it’s so common, that one in three adults suffer from it), but pulmonary high blood pressure occurs in the right side of the heart (and it’s rare, only 100,000 people are known to suffer from it). It’s a very serious disease, potentially lethal, and it affects primarily the heart, and not the lungs (it can lead even to the heart losing its ability to pump). Its symptoms usually are: swollen legs and ankles, blue extremities, skin and lips, cough, dizziness and chronic fatigue. It can often be mistaken for asthma or bronchitis. This is enough to start with, I believe, for people that don't really know anything about PAH.

How do you explain to your friends and people that ask what PAH is? Do you share your story, are you tired of sharing it, or prefer to keep quiet?

An inspiring PAH story, here.
