I am in need of some advise...I recently went through an ordeal and some others have suggested that the feelings I am having are from ptsd, but I have never been diagnosed as such, nor have I sought out counseling or professional help on any level for any of these feeling....panic attacks, fear, etc. All of these things had subsided due to circumstances, which just recently took a turn for the worse. Now they are running on overload and I am scared to go anywhere or be anywhere alone. I am ready to run out and go for ccw classes or get a stun gun to protect myself. And I swear I see things that may not even be there...Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for the help in advance,

Hugs,

Jenna

Very familiar. I can see, smell, and hear things associated with my trauma that aren't even there when things are bad. With meds and therapy I have gotten things to a point where I no longer have these thoughts but I still sometimes get breakthroughs. Unfortunately for me, there are no classes I can take to make me feel more proteced so I just have to suck it up, so to say.

I would definitely recommend seeking therapy to talk out your problems and to learn some healthy coping techniques. Best wishes.

BE BLESSED!

Thanks for your reply - for some reason I didn't even see it until just now. Things are gradually tapering off, although today I did have one incident for a brief few minutes when I thought I was going to have a panic attack. I had to walk into a gas station and if I had seen myself walk in I would have wondered what was wrong with me! I was looking at everyone really good to make sure they were not a certain person....you know, in panic mode when fear has taken over..Anyway, thanks for the post and I am glad this is familiar to someone else too. Although that does not mean I am glad you are also going through it!!

Hugs,

Jenna

Based off of what you are saying, you do have PTSD. I am a counselor in training, and have studied this disorder in depth. You definitely have this disorder, and a good workbook to go through is, "The PTSD Workbook." This has worked wonders for me, but I also recommend you go to a Counselor if you could. Blessings.

jenna-

without getting into specifics as to what happened, i can tell you that paranoia seems to go hand in hand with ptsd from what i have seen. i am an iraqi war vet that can tell you from first hand experience that what you are feeling is not uncommon. i do recommend that you hold off on the use of weapons until you can get the whole matter worked out with a therapist. shooting someone or something should only be used as a very last result where you are in fear of your life or great bodily harm. it is a decision that can change your life forever. respectfully, SM

Hi Jenna,

Dont make light of any of your feeling. sometimes we push the feeling we have to the back of our minds becasue it makes us feel crazy or we feel that if we tell anyone they'll think we're crazy, but the feelings are real. the symptoms do subside when you are focussed on something entirely different and nothing in your immediate day to day activities are reminding you of your ordeal. My therepist told me that victims of traumatic experiences developed this heightened awareness of their environment and i think that's what happens to you when you went into the gas station. You automatically "scope out" the entire area looking for anyone that may pose a threat to you. I know how you feel about the weapon, but shadowmedic is right, unless you know what your're doing, you could hurt yourself. i always felt scared at home alone and i got a dog. not only that but i used to sleep with i knife with arms reach. Now i just have knives and hammers and other gadgets strategically located around the house. it doesnt hurt to carry mace or pepper spray if it'll make you feel safer. you are not alone.
