I'm curious how many others with PCOS are on Metformin? My daughter started on it about 10 months ago and I believe it has helped her... Anyone have any problems with it?

I am on metformin. Started out slow, low dosage. Immediately it caused stomach upset, gas pains and running to the bathroom. After a few weeks this subsided and my body got used to it. I am now on the max FDA approved dosage of it. (500mg x 5 daily) I have been on it for 14 years. I still have the running to the bathroom part if I eat when I take it, but it is just something I have learned to live with.... Other than that, no problems...except for the fishy smell right out of the bottle that sometimes makes me want to barf... !!

Wow! My daughter is the opposite... if she doesn't eat with it, it makes her stomach very upset... So she always either eats or drinks a big glass of milk or juice with it...

I have been on Met (2000mg) since 2001. It has been my godsend! I also include naturals in my diet to help...cinnemon, almonds, lots of fruit and veggies.

Thanks for the advice about the pains.... the doctor told me that it is normal and she said it can also be the birth control they put me on to regulate my periods (yasmin)

On another note, i also started metformin last week and it made me get upset stomach and get kind of gassy so just drink a big glass of milk or eat a good meal with it so it wont give you the side affects that bad.... i'm feeling better now that my body is used to it... but i hear that Met will really help you out.... hope all goes well!

Birth control hormones are not the answer and actually hurts PCOS rather than helps. Below is an excerpt from my PCOS kit I have created.

BCH’s do not mix well with PCOS – bottom line - they do not treat the disease. PCOS is a progressive disease where it gets worse with age if left untreated. While some of the symptoms may go away with BCH’s it gives the false impression the PCOS is getting better. Many women that go off BCH’s experience worse symptoms then when they went on because the disease was being ignored.

Another reason you should not take BCH’s is the prescription still allows stimulation to the ovaries but not enough to mature them for release. Women who do not have PCOS dissolve the unused eggs but in women with PCOS they tend to turn into cysts. Ovaries give off androgens, which acts like testosterone. Each cyst also gives off androgens. When our androgen levels are up, this increases side effects associated with it – weight gain in the midriff and upper arms, hair loss, excess body/facial hair, etc. It also increases the likelihood of throwing off other hormones.

It is very important to keep a natural menstrual cycle. Menstrauls are like the bodies thermometer for health issues. For PCOS sufferers menstrual issues are one of the key elements in knowing when the disease is making a change. Take that away by inducing it monthly with BCH’s and you take away your thermometer.

There are better alternatives to having menstruals when you need them. You can take provera – which is temporary and will trigger a cycle, the effects of which can last up to 3 cycles. Many women have success with natural supplements or medications like Metformin to help treat the PCOS and help reverse symptoms. Living a diabetic lifestyle will also help treat the disease and in turn alleviate symptoms.

BCH’s risk factors add to our already existing risk factors – a double whammy to prediabetics/diabetics. Women with PCOS have issues with insulin and it has been brought to light that BCH’s also inhibit proper insulin response. Why impact your health even more with BCH’s? The idea is to improve this issue, isn’t it?

If your doctor prescribes BCH’s and sends you on your way, s/he is not fully knowledgeable on PCOS and it would be encouraged to seek another opinion.
