Hi all,

I have just been diagnosed with PCOS today. I have been dealing with this pain more intensly for the last year. After surgery and medication, finally today I have an answer. Now what. I have been gaining weight around my abdomen and want to excercise. When I am active the next day I am on taking vicadin and sleeping the afternoon away. Any tips on weight loss, excercise and managing the pain?? I have been taking depoluprine(sp??) shots for the last 3 months. I am now on progesterone and a birth control pill with progesterone in it. I had a blood clot after the birth of my son, so they have to be careful in treatment. Any thoughts, ideas, advice, etc., would really help. Thanks so much!!!

Fellow cysta!!

Hey Kimber,

Firstly, welcome to the group Smile

By losing weight, through diet and exercise, women affected by PCOS are more likely to have:

*Regular periods

*More ovulatory cycles

*Reduced hairiness

*Stabilized hormone levels

*Reduced risk of heart disease

Most importantly, though, weight loss will help to lower your insulin levels. High insulin levels has been found to contribute significantly to the many PCOS symptoms, reducing your insulin levels should result in an improvement in acne and hirsutism as well as decrease your risk for heart disease and diabetes Smile

They say that that losing between 5% and 10% of your body weight is often enough to ease the symptoms of PCOS but it is difficult for us sufferers to lose weight Sad My advice would be to be sensible, eat healthier, exercise more etc.. However, in some cases, drugs like Metformin (trade name 'Glucophage' or 'Glucophage XR') may still be prescribed. Apparantly Metformin works in 3 ways:

*It decreases the absorption of dietary carbohydrates through the intestines.

*It reduces the production of glucose by the liver.

*Metformin increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin.

When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but dont you quit.

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you can never tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar.

My doc just prescribed Glucophage yesterday. I took it last night. I have been feeling very nauseous since yesterday. Not sure if it is all the meds or a bug. Ugh. I had gestational diabetes during my first pregnancy, not with my second. My mom and 2 aunts have type 2 diagetes. Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate it.

Hey Kimber,

What dosage are you on? Apparantly the best way to take Metaformin is to start out with a low dosage & work your way up to dosage recommended by your doctor...and you're welcome Smile

I think it was a stomach bug. I am not feeling quite so sick anymore. I am very tired though. Right now I am taking 1 pill every day for 2 weeks then 2 pills a day. I think my progesterone is 500 mg. How long have you had this stuff?? I am very emotional too. Do you experience that too??

Im glad your feeling better Smile

Im not on anything for pcos, i'm on a lot of other pills for my fibromyalgia so am unable to take anything else. I did have the mirena coil fitted a few years ago for my pcos & endometriosis. It is my miracle worker!!! I have always been very emotional (i've had pcos & endo for longer than i care to remember) but thanks to the fibro its even worse these days (my poor family lol).

Unfortunatly i have alot of stuff wrong with me so i've been on many pills & potions most of my life & anything i'm not sure on i google!! Laughing Its nice to be able to help others out Smile
