It is awesome that there is a PCOS support group! My 17 year old dd has PCOS. She was diagnosed about a year ago after having a lot of abdominal pain. She had all of the symptoms, yet many of the doctors missed it.

She's been on Metformin for about 10 months now and has lost about 30 pounds and is starting to feel better. She still wants to lose 20 more pounds, and is working hard on it, but it's been harder lately...

Any others that have PCOS?

Bev

Hi Bev,

I am Jenna. I have PCOS. Diagnosed 14 years ago, but probably had it more like 20-something years ago. I always had irregular periods. Lots of abdominal pain, no doctor could diagnose me until I saw a reproductive endocrinologist in 1993. I did lose a lot of weight immediately on the metformin (Glucophage). I could never figure out why I weighed what I did when I barely ate anything to begin with! I also was sent for a cat scan at first, but then mris of the brain to diagnose me with a pituitary tumor which is also common with pcos. It's a prolactinoma, which pushes on the pituitary making it produce way more prolactin than needed. My body would think I was pregnant (lactating) then and not have a period or ovulate. I then went on meds to shrink the tumor and the prolactin went down to normal rather quickly and I still have to go yearly for mris to make sure it's not back. I did end up having one single birth and twins throughout the course of the 14 years....so there is that possibility for yoru daughter too. One doctor had told me the only way to 'fix' me was to go through a pregnancy, but since I was not ovulating, that was impossible, so I was lost in a catch 22. Guess I proved that doctor wrong!! Best of luck with everything for you and your daughter...I have been through a lot with this pcos and tried many many treatments. Please feel free to ask me anything ok?

Hugs,

Jenna

Thanks Jenna... Becca first started with the abdominal pain a year ago in October. Her Pediatrician scheduled a sonogram for her, thinking it was a cyst or something, and they found a tumor in her bladder. That wasn't what was causing her pain, but it was a Godsend to find it when she wasn't even having any bladder symptoms. They removed the tumor and determined that it was cancer. Talk about a shock! She was only 16 years old, which was completely rare for a young lady to have!

Anyway, after she recovered from that surgery, she still had the abdominal pain... we went to see a gyno, she suspected PCOS and sent us to the Endo. He finally diagnosed her in the Spring of this year.

She still has the abdominal pain, but not as bad. She's lost quite a bit of weight, but still wants to lose more, in hopes that it will finally help the abdominal pain...

She also suffers from NDPH, so she lives with pain 24/7 in her head and her abdomen. Not a fun thing when you're 17 years old and trying to enjoy your senior year!

It's great to hear that you had successful pregnancies! It gives us hope for the future!

Bev

When they did the surgery did they check her for endometriosis? It can only be found during a lap or during surgery.

No they didn't. At that point we didn't know she had PCOS... It wasn't until the pain didn't go away after the surgery that we started pushing and found out she had PCOS.

I suggest asking the doctor for a laparoscopy and giving them permission to remove any endo, scar tissue and cysts during surgery with a thermopen. It's a great "refresher". I myself had this done in 2001 and I still have lasting results for the outpatient-surgery. Look up Ovarian Drilling to learn how it is performed.

I just joined up only becuase it didn't seem like there was any right forum for this, I just read most of this post... I just had laparoscopy, y? you might ask, they finally found something in an ultra sound, 5 years of complaining and bam, there's a cyst, a complicated one at that!

Heres the begining, while growning up I had regular cramping, but un-normal periods, very long and heavy with few breaks between, kept getting the shot to stop it all from happening, in 2001 I got on the shot, I was 21, now this wasn't the first or the last time, but when I got off in 2002, I went 1 full year no periods, finally they started! and guess what, they were NORMAL! I could count the day, but something was bad, very bad, I had the pain like you wouldn't ,belive, not cramp, stabbing pains, bad to the point of screaming or crying, it happened at ovulation and period... from 2003 til now I have done nothing but pester ever doc I have came across and have gotten ultra sounds, sound like adhesions or endo you might say, and they belived it, but said there wasn;t much they could do til now, I have the cyst, I go for laparoscopy, they wake me only 1 and a half hours later to tell me, there were no cycst no endo no adhesions, nothing, a beautiful uteris and ovaries, and nothing can be seen, I have always had normal paps, What could be wrong! the nurse said from sexual abuse women have been known to end up with Fibromialgia and dismennorah, which is what they are now calling what I have... Do you women know anyone to have unexplained very painful periods and ovulation?

Thanks in advance

Amber
