I wanted to bring up Independent Living Centers (ILC) http://www.ilusa.com/links/ilcenters.htm

Most people have never heard of them. They are centers for the disabled that hold activities such as workshops on cooking, crafts, they take short trips, etc. and can help direct you to job training if you believe you want to return to work, and they help with various things. Also, some disabled become depressed and isolated, and this is a way to bring you out of that isolation. Plus they usually have buses/vans to pick you up for activities. You have to telephone them and make an appointment to join (which is free) and they are an agency funded by the various states and counties, United Way and other foundations.

Some ILCs are better than others, but it takes a call and making an appointment to see what is available at the ILC near you and what they can do for you. The one I go to has a booklet with resources of phone numbers for advocates, the disabled law center and many other places if we need help with something. Just give it a try and see what it may have to offer for you.

This sounds like a great thing for disabled folks. I think especially, like you said, they get lonely and depressed. Keeping busy is important.

Thanks for the post!

Hi Debbi: I don't know how many people even know about the ILCs and I thought if I put it up maybe it might give some disabled a place to reach out to get some help. When the place where I live gave me trouble with having service animals, the ILC told me to go to HUD and that was the right place to direct me to go. So ILCs have a wealth of info too.
