Research has found a new successful device for those with aura and migraines (but they don't know if it will work for those without auras and migraines). They are seeking approval now. Read about it.

cool; I rarely get that type though (and if I took a tylenol and took a nap it was gone; so obviously mine are too mild for this type of device). I was disapointed that there wasn't any mention of MRI study since there is that "abnormality" in the brain that they see with migraine suffers.

gotta love new medical advances, my chronic headaches are treated with muscle relaxers and massage since they are caused by muscle spasms in my neck!

6/9/06 - biopsy positive for cancer
6/23/06 - DIAGNOSIS: stage IV (T4d N2 M1) invasive ductile carcinoma NOS with bone and liver mets; 17 cm mass (primary tumors), inflammatory breast cancer(IBC); HER2/neu+, HR-
6/26/06-12/11/06 - Chemo FEC/Taxol w/Herceptin & Aredia
12/20/06 - right modified radical mastectomy, 7 of 13 removed nodes showed evidence of prior disease
12/21/06 - No Evidence of Disease (stage IV/NED); complete remission
2/6/07-3/22/07-Radiation 28+5 boost, 6040cGy.
CURRENT: Still NED, taking Herceptin and Zometa without end. Heart and kidney function remains normal.

Actually MRIs don't always pick up everything. I found that out after my car accident years ago. Once they opened me up in surgery they realized the MRI didn't pick up some of the broken bones and it was more extensive surgery than planned.

Also, a stupid ENT doctor last year told me he diagnoses people solely by CAT scans of their head and he saw nothing on my cat scan. I had been sent for repeat sinus infections and now had so much yellow green mucous coming out of my nose that he was getting kleenex for me and I would blow my nose and it was going all over my hands. I asked him where was all this infected mucous on the CAT scan--the doctor was completely blank and could say nothing. He had to treat me for the infected mucous and hopefully learned machines don't pick up everything.

So the MRI does not always pick up migraine abnormalities with all migraine suffers. I have never had auras. I have had severe migraines for 16 years and been to see many neurologists, and had so many tests throughout the years and many different pills. I would end up in the E.R. when the migraines would finally reach a level where I could not remember my Mom's name, my own address and such.

Changing to this new HMO carrier in the past few years, I was sent to their own neurologist who specializes in migraines. He gives me occipital neural blocks, which I explain to people are sort of an epidural but longer lasting (it can last 3 weeks to 5 weeks, depending on how I'm doing--for some of his patients, they last a year), but I can only have 3 of those blocks in a set period of time. He has been the only one who has given me any real relief. Plus he placed me on Imitrex with 2 Aleve (they have that pill all in one now) with Metoclopram to stop the nausea and vomiting. That used to relieve the migraine in 45 minutes, but is now taking about an hour or 75 minutes to relieve the migraine. But I appreciate the relief.

I have been in the neurologist's office during several of my migraines and he said physically he notices I lose color, under my eyes becomes dark, my eyes squint and are lifeless and I'm over a trash can because one of those little vomit pans just won't do it. Within 2 to 3 minutes of doing the block, it stops the migraine and I feel great and he said, my color comes back, the dark goes away from under my eyes, I don't squint, and my eyes are bright and full of life and I'm smiling and no more vomiting or nausea. It is a tremendous difference.

I told my friend that when they finally autopsy me, they'll find my brain is nothing but a gerbil running on a wheel, but that the wheel is rusted and bent so it was bumping against my head and causing the migraines. See, it was that simply all along.

It's amazing all the technology we have and the still can't find stuff! That was the deal with my breast cancer; inflammatory breast cancer doesn't grow in a lump (so you don't find it doing your exam) and it doesn't show up in mammograms/x-rays/ultrasounds. It goes undiagnosed/misdiagnosed until it's "too late" for most patients.

Sounds like they have a long way to go for headaches/migraines. Anything with the brain I think has a long way to go; very complex!

I love it when you go to the doc; something is obviously wrong; and they say oh nothing in the scan, it's all good! I hope you got that mucous all over him!

Hugs

Hey Jessi, every time I sneezed it was like anyone around me needed to duck and take cover--and the doctor was getting behind me when I sneezed and was handing me loads of kleenex. Geez, the military could have pointed me, waited for me to sneeze and I could have been an evil chemical weapon!!!!

new advances in biological warfare, i love it! sometimes we have to get our kicks by "getting" the medical staff. One time for a CT scan (I warned them I had bad veins) they kept sticking me and it HURT! She finally got it in on the side of my wrist (OWWW), I passed out twice and threw up 2 bottles of contrast all over her! Maybe next time she'll listen!

hugs

Jessi, sometimes revenge is so sweet, even if it is vomit!!!!

I have to tell you a funny story. My male cat is so great at revenge at the vet. When they were doing the check up after his surgery and pushing it just too much, he didn't meow, growl, hiss, or claw them, he began to drool in mass, and that is his secret weapon. The vet had to get paper towels (note that is plural)and the vet and the tech had drool all over them and all over the exam table. As soon as he was back into my scooter basket, the drool stopped. My cat says Gandhi could have used it as another means of protest---peaceful resistance and drool.
