I became disabled in a blink of an eye in an accident. It seems like once you hurt the body permanently, I believe the immune system can begin to work so hard to try to heal that soon it can malfunction and other ailments can begin and soon I had systemic and malar lupus. With the malar lupus I get that butterfly rash across my face (appropriate for this Butterfly board). The migraines are killers and I see a migraine neurologist for occipital neural blocks that I can only have 3 times a year.

I went from working full time to damaging my back and being in the hospital 6 days to going right back to work with a walker. I did everything to try to keep working and the pain was horrible, but my employer let me go. The employer had boxes stacked so I could not get my walker to the printer and the employer wouldn't move the boxes--I realize now the employer actually had many ADA violations and truthfully did not want to make accommodations to have disabled people working there.

I went through the Social Security Disability system and was approved and learned alot about that in the process. You really have to be proactive--even if you have an attorney--because SSA isn't going to prove your case for you and not all attorneys are going to put time in on your case.

HI Suz. Welcome! I am fairly new to this board also. I have been disabled for quite a while but just last year decided it was time to stop fighting it and quit my job. It was a hard thing to do but have been sick for years and years. I applied for SSD but I was denied first time around and am now in appeals. I am praying I get it approved this time. I have a very complex medical history and I am sure it is confusing to the SSD staff. I have been very proactive, I have sent all medical records from every single doctor and hospital I have been in, I have written letters about my daily life, my doctor has mailed several letters explaining my unique situation and that I am totally disabled and so much more. Whenever I start taking a new medication, I send it to my case worker. I have not worked for 13 months now.

I am sorry you were in a car accident, but at least you are here to talk about it!

Hi Debbi and I'm so glad you replied. That's good that you are being so proactive with your SSD case. Just a suggestion, but do everything possible to keep all appointments with your doctors (and specialists) too as that is important to show SSD that you are still treating. SSD makes it very difficult to get approved and they also make mistakes, so I'm really glad you are so active in your case.

Also, you are not alone in trying to work when you are struggling with such disabling conditions and one day you finally come to the realization you just can't work any more. Last year I finally gave up using the little handicapped plaqard on the car's rear view mirror and traded it in for the handicapped car license plates. I finally accepted I wasn't going to get better and I was "permanently" disabled.
