Having just gone through this, I wanted to get the word out that if you are suffering with long lasting fatigue/lack of energy, it may be time to have your doctor check your B-12 levels.

I am in the midst of just over 6 months of incredible fatigue and lack of energy, and the need to take naps. It has been horrible. My one HMO primary care (PC) did nothing. I changed PCs and my new one decided to check and I have very low B-12 deficiency.

In reading about B-12 levels, it appears that few doctors actually check this. I have one of so many articles about this below and if you have any of the symptoms (you don't have to have all of them), discuss it with your doctor. It's a fast, easy blood test and so worth it.

Sometimes with low B-12, taking B-12 pills won't work because of absorption problems so the doctor gives weekly injections for a while as the injection absorbs quickly and very well, to help get you back up to a healthy level, then reduces to monthly. Its worth reading.

Hi Debbi: I was at a group meeting the other day and told them about my B-12 deficiency and several people there had such fatigue for a few months, but their primary care doctors (PC) were attributing it to depression. So they are now returning to their PCs and insisting on B-12 lab work so they can be checked.

I have to have injections for 4 weeks in a row and then monthly. But for how long do they have you getting injections. When I asked initially, I was told for a very long time. I have no objection because it is zero cost under my HMO, but I was just wondering. Did your fatigue improve once you were getting the injections for a while?

At first, (I have been taking them a LONG time) I felt that my fatigue was better, but after a while I still felt the same. I have been getting the shots for at least 10 years now.

Hi Debbi: I found out today that my blood work indicates I have pernicious anemia, which is why I have the B-12 deficiency--the pernicious anemia won't allow my system to absorb B-12. Now I understand so much better why I have the B-12 deficiency. I have two more weekly injections then they're going to do it monthly. After a year to two years of monthly injections, then they're going to retest me. The nurse today said the doctor told her that if I actually reach the normal B-12 level during a retest, he may do a trial of B-12 pills to see if I can then absorb them after a year or two of injections, but he'll watch it carefully and test me throughout.
