Hi Teresa,

Thank you for your well meant mail. However, I do not think Harry will give counseling a try. Perhaps I will suggest the same. Your advice on his teaching carols seems appealing. I shall put that across too. Right now, he seems to be wallowing in self-pity, but I guess it’s time that he puts his life together. That will ease us too. Yes, I do have wonderful and helpful boys.

I wish some others with similar disabilities will come forward to share experiences. If Harry gets to read, he will not feel victimized. That’s what he needs right now. In the meantime I can gently suggest counseling. But I’m afraid that my suggestion of approaching a shrink can be unnerving to him.

Dear Helen,

Give yourself a break!

I know the thought of approaching a shrink can be unnerving to even logical folks. But, shrinks can put the matter into proper perspective. Moreover, you and Harry will get to talk to the counselor privately. You can sort your dilemmas together and in person.

Another suggestion, take a vacation. Perhaps your boys can help out. Pack the necessary things you would need and takeoff to a quiet place. A long holiday can brighten your life and his as well. You can gently broach the topic of a counselor to Harry, or you could suggest what else he can do with his life. You have been patient, but can I suggest that you be assertive too.

Teresa

i can tell you that the first time i went to see a shrink - i did shrink.

its not easy and too many people tell you too many different things!

but as the meetings progressed and i started feeling this was realy helping me - i started going to the shrink with a lot of joy.

these days its one of the best times i have.
