Below is a extremely truthful quote from a disabled person whose documentary is featured from time to time on cable's independent channel. I saw it a long time ago and this man was disabled and in an iron lung and fought to remain at home with a caretaker that would come in from time to time. He was able to use a computer through special means and his caretaker would take him for "walks around the city" for short times to give him some sense of life even though he was disabled. He lost his battle for life but his thoughts through his writings remain and you can catch some of them below at his web site.

"I want people to think of disability as a social problem . . . . Everyone becomes disabled unless they die first."

Mark O’Brien July 31, 1949 – July 3, 1999.

I also hope that after reading the above on Mark O'Brien, that we think about what qualities heroes have in today's world. Do our heroes have to run and jump and play basketball or baseball, or can we find heroes that continue through disability in an iron lung and refuse to give up and so they fight authorities to remain at home instead of a hospital or some sterile environment, and continue to write, to create poetry, to use a computer using their mouth.
