So many with permanent disability have chronic pain, but few realize the real toll of chronic pain:

Chronic pain takes a toll on every part of your life. It's difficult to come to terms with the fact that everything that you did that makes you you is basically gone. Thanks for the link, I think that it'll help explain alot.

Hi Vicki: Some insurance companies push primary care doctors to be the only ones to deal with chronic pain (for monetary reasons), and many primary care doctors are not educated enough about how to treat chronic pain cases PLUS may also be afraid of state/federal agencies coming down on them for prescribing sufficient meds to relieve the pain.

I was on an insurance plan that only allowed pain management specialists to do back epidurals which failed miserably. But the insurance plan wouldn't allow the pain management doctors to help me any further with pain management for chronic pain and I had to return to the primary care doctor for that without any success. I finally went outside of the system and came up with a type of meditation and discovered with my one cat as my partner that I can relax and get out of pain for a while. I feel for those that haven't found a way to release pain even for a short while.

AND chronic pain creates other problems such as depression and can potentially lower the body's immune system to other ailments. It can also disrupt the family and cause significant others to leave because they can't take being with the disabled person in chronic pain any longer. So I truly wish chronic pain would be taken as a priority in health care in the U.S. because people in chronic pain deserve to receive treatment to get out of pain so they can live a better life.

I think that the depression and the fact that so few people believe us, or just get tired of hearing about it are the hardest things to deal with. Along with the lack of believe, we need to even add doctors, employers, Social Security Admin, VA or any other entity that we need to use for assistance. It's very difficult to keep your pride and have to beg these people for what is actually yours and what you have earned and deserved.

Hi Vicki and you are so right and you're preaching to the choir here on this board. I wish that all doctors, employers, SSA and VA people could be in a simulator that would provide pain for a half hour while they had to do calculations, while they had to type and do "tasks" so these people that are important to care and benefits in our life could see what pain is like.

Also, here is an excellent article on how to describe pain to our doctors and perhaps this may be of help to others (I'm also placing this in the treatment section).
