My father suffered a stroke very young, at 55, and he was left paralysed on his right side. All his disability claims were rejected. How can this be, and where can we turn? He is clearly unable to continue working, and he is uneligible for pension...

This is so unfair, and so stupid, and anybody who've seen the devastating sequels of a stroke must know what I'm talking about.

Hi Cius, and although this is a late response, it may be helpful. I am not an attorney. My suggestion is that on disability claims or Social Security Disability (SSD) claims, always realize that they are not there to prove your father's case for him. If he cannot actively get all records, get doctor's to provide paperwork as to his being permanently disabled, then he will have to get someone to help him. As to SSD, the State Area Agency on Aging will help him pursue his case for free. You can also call your city's main office and ask for your Community Services department. Then ask them for an advocate to help your Dad pursue his SSD case. But if your Dad gives up, then he gets nothing. Disability policies from work can be just as frustating and that could be handled along with the SSD paperwork. If your Dad feels that all this is too much, then it may be time to have an attorney handle his case on a contingent fee basis (the attorney gets paid when your Dad wins). Best wishes to you and your Dad and hugs.
