The new Doctor I am seeing wants me to switch from gabapentin to lyrica. Is lyrica that much better? I don't need to gain weight, actually I need to lose 50 lbs this year! Any comments would help! I am taking 300-400 mg/day of the gabapentin. It makes me so tired it is hard to function & keep going sometimes. I've been on it for over a year.

A previous doctor of mine had me switch too, saying Gabapentin is old-school and Lyrica is much better. I tried it for 2 months and found Gabapentin went farther to control my nerve pain so I switched back to Gabapentin. As I understand it, increased appetite, weight gain and drowsiness are side effects of Lyrica, too so don't switch for those reasons. I'm a proponent of Gabapentin myself. It cost less and works as well or better than anything else I've tried.

fyi, I take 600mg Gabapentin 3xday (1800mg) after having been up to as much as 2400mg/day then back down to 1200mg, then back up to 1800mg in eternal hope of relief. Still looking...

Thank you so much! The Lyrica will cost quite a bit more than the gabapentin does. I appreciate the answer!

I have taken both of them, I can say this. Lyrica made me have suicidal thoughts, however with marijuana the pain was almost 100% gone. Gabapentin was less effective, and made me depressed yet not suicidal.

Neurotin and lyrica are basically the same exact ingredients as one anyother. It was created by the same maker for those that said it caused side effects and they would switch them over to Lyrica. lmao its the same med but they charge you much more. Im on 2400 mgs daily and have been for a very long time. Im pretty sure 2400 is the max dosage that can be written..

I went ahead and switched and am glad I did! The Gabapentin left me almost in a stupor and they wanted me taking more. The Lyrica makes me feel a little tired but not bad @ all. The fog is lifted!

No "bad " thoughts & marijuana is not legal here in IL!

I have taken gabapentin and lyrica. Lyrica by itself didn't work for me but when taken with the gabapentin it worked well. But I was told you're not supposed to take the two of them together so I just stayed with the Gabapentin. I'm currently at 3600 mg/day of gabapentin and have tried multiple other drugs but none seem to work. Good luck. Oh I also noticed that Lyrica was a lot more expensive on our insurance. I pay $10 every two weeks (since the insurance will only cover 100 instead of 180 like I need) and the Lyrica would have been $30 a month.
