Can anyone enlighten me on how long it takes to get rid of Pericarditis? I had a bad attack about 2 months ago and my doctor sent me home with Aleve. It went away within hours, so I thought, no problem.

But a month later it came back full force, and actually caused me to go into Atrial Fib and end up in the hospital! Now I've been released and am on Colchicine and 600 mg Ibruprofen. For awhile it helped, but the Pericarditis feeling is still there and dragging me down. Any suggestions???

Hi I know how you feel! I have had recurring Pericarditis for about 10 years now. My cardiologist has me on Colchicine and 600 mg Ibruprofen...I have been on both for 1 year now...It has helped with the amount of flares i have and the length of time that they last...But mine just come and go...and there is really no way to get rid of it...it will hit ya when it wants too! But just wanted to let you know that i understand how you feel..Good luck...And one more thing, usually if you have more than one case of pericarditis, it is more likely to come back again...If you need to know anything about it feel free to ask Good luck!

Thank you Kellygirl for your reply.... Wow.. 10 years? I don't like to think of being stuck with this for that long!! However, since my doctor took me off the Ibruprofen and instead put me on Cardia, Indomathicin (sp?) and Colchicine, I have had minimal symptoms.

I am also wondering.... has anyone else had repetitive diarhhea with this condition??? We are wondering if these conditions can be related?

thanks ... karen

hi...yeah 10 long years..Mine all stared from a car wreck in 1997...which caused damage to my heart....but within the pass 3 years my pericarditis has been more often and lasts longer. The Colchicine can cause horrible stomach cramps and diarhhea...it does it to me evertime i have a flare up...ugg and it is so horrible...but daily i take 0.3mg of Colchicine, and then when i have a flare up i take 2 0.6mg...and that is when it causes the intestinal problems...If the Colchicine doesn't help within the next 3 months my cardiologist is going to put me on steroids..which i am not looking forward to..but i guess there is not much i can do inless i choose to have a pericardiotomy, which i am putting off until i just can't live with the pericarditis...

But my doctor also put me on a mild anxiety medication (clonazepam) that helps keep me less stressed when i have a flare up and keeps my heart rate down too..I have been on that for about 6 months and it has helped alot...my heart rate went from 110 just sitting to 80...
