ROFL. So much for the translator I found on the Internet. ha. What I typed in was "We thank you for all that you do".

I guess I need to find another one. Too funny!

Absolutely Facinating!!! I was spellbound through all 19 pages of posts. Thanks all of you for the questions, the interest and the willingness to share about a time and place we've only "heard" about.

Ha, for once I have the Botanical name. We call it 'niyangala'. It grows wild & its yam is very poisonous. Usually people don't grow it but I have a creeper - it's so beautiful.

There's a folk tale about the Niyangala. I'll tell it & leave u guys for a while.....Smile Don't remember all details but this is the gist of the story - A brother & sister from a royal family were travelling across a jungle ( why /wherefore, cannot be remembered) They stopped to rest & the brother stuck his sword in the ground. In the olden days, they chewed betel to relax just like u'd have a smoke or a beer. The sister asked for a "vitak" ie betel leaf, arecanut & chunam. That's the regular combo. chunam is a white paste carried by betel-eaters in a tiny box & very little goes into one 'vitak'. so the brother got the other stuff ready & looked for a way to get a bit of chunam out. he took his sword & with the tip took a bit & gave the sister. Even as she chewed her 'vita' she collapsed & died. the distraught brother cdn't understand; while he grieved there he thought & found a Niyangala yam where his sword was stuck & so he concluded that the yam was poisonous.

That's my little story from Sri Lanka.

Great story Priyeni! The red and yellow of the flower remind me of the flames of a fire burning brightly in the night!
Sometimes as writers we worry too much about creating a masterpiece when we should just be thankful the words flow at all.

Priyeni, you have an interesting garden. I've seen lots of flowers over the years but I don't remember ever seeing the last one you posted. Very interesting!

Coffee

Some bits about coffee that may be of interest.

We have the best of coffee "coffee Arabica" growing here but....

The sad story here is that we & many other small-holders find that it

is just not worth to grow coffee anymore. We cannot even cover our

costs when we get approx. Rs 300/- per kilo (less than US $ 3) .

Packeted, ground coffee sells at approx Rs 2,000/- per kilo (about US

$ 20). We have to depend on the 'middle-man' to sell our beans as it

is not cost effective to transport small quantities to Colombo.

So if you visit Gomera now, you'll find coffee trees laden with berries

& as many on the ground below.

This is a pic of coffee berries in Gomera. Thanks to Steve & several

hours of struggling I somewhat mastered layering of photos.

contd....
