Hello. I'm new to this posting site...as well I should be, since it is new itself.

My father was clinically diagnosed with Parkinson's over the summer months this year. My grandmother had it as did other family members of years gone by. My concern is, what are the other symptoms that Parkinson's patients exhibit outside of the traditional foot shuffling, tremors, slow dexterity movement, etc. According to my mother who attended my father's doctor, those with Parkinson's may also experience outbursts of anger and then react on those outbursts, ie. actual fighting, mind control arguments, etc. What can I do to better understand what my father is experiencing? Thanks to those of you who respond to this post.

Linda

Hello Kohdah65!

I'm certainly not an expert, but some of the lesser known symptoms include -

fatigue, trembling, difficulty arising from a seated position, lowered voice volume (dysarthria),losing track of words/thoughts, loss of animation, small and cramped handwriting. Also, depression, dementia and emotional changes of some of the even lesser known symptoms, but still quite serious. There may also be skin and sleep problems and difficulty urinating or having bowel movements.

Hope this helps!!

My dad with PD has started to exhibit more anger, and often demands things instead of asking nicely for them. This drives me nuts. I think the anger comes from the fact that moving around is getting more and more difficult for him, and he is getting frustrated with himself. He wants to walk and move around, but it is so difficult for him. When he demands something from me, I will ask him to tell it to me nicely and I'll do whatever it is that he wants. Hey, I could never be nasty to him growing up, so why should I tolerate him being nasty to me now. Maybe he doesn't realize it. I am sure his dementia adds to his frustration. He can no longer understand things like he used to.

Parkinson characterized clinically by bradykinesia, resting tremor, coghwell rigidity, and postural reflex impairment. It affects over 1 million people in North America. Approximately 1% of the US and Europian populations over the age of 60 have Parkinson’s disease. It is affecting about 1% of 65-year-old individuals and rising to 5% by 85 years of age.

My dad now has a wonderful geriatric doctor who is able to treat my dad's Parkinson's without any neurological testing which is what he had feared so greatly. He is on a low dose of a PD drug which seems to be helping him with his alertness, at the very least. Not much help physically however. He is much more "with it."
