I hi-jacked this link from someone on the BPII forum since there are so many new parents here. GG or Lillipets, can you do your stickie magic?

I stole this from someone else in one of these forums - but it fits! ;)

I am the mother of a 21 year old BP daughter (whom at the moment, I say is "in remission" with the help of Lithium, biweekly therapy for 4.5 years, and an intensive outpatient course of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).)

Great Link! Thanks for the info. I do have a question...So I'm reading how if your teen is diagnosed as BP but takes only antidepressant meds then that is bad and can throw them into the rapid cycling. But what about the reverse? Let's say they suffer from depression but it is treated like BP and they get an antidepressant AND a mood stabilizer. What happens then? My daughter was originally diagnosed BP from her medical doctor just based upon a questionaire. Later her PDoc said it wasn't BP and was anxiety with depression. She takes only an antidepressant now and I think lately we have been seeing this rapid cycling. Is there any harm in putting her on BP meds? If things got better then would we know it IS REALLY BP?

My only response to that is to tell you what my daughter's PDoc responded when I asked whether or not she had BPI or BPII -- "It won't change how I'm treating her, so why bother with the labels?" What he was saying was that he wanted to find what got my daughter stable; he would decide what the formal diagnosis was going to be after that was accomplished.
