Hi!

I am new here. My oldest was just diagnosed with very severe ADHD, more attention than anything.

The diagnosis makes so many things make sense, but so much more that doesn't make sense. She will be 12 this month, so I think we are kinda late in the game to find this out.

I hope that this will be a place to help me make sense of it all, and to learn more.

hi snowman, yes weekends are slow, I know I don't get on much then, sorry!

I hope this group helps - my son wasn't diagnosed until he was 14, but it explained a lot. He is the inattentive type. I have to be in constant contact with teachers and his councellor, and make sure he gets help staying "on task". He was taking Concerta but stopped, and I didn't want to make him. It did help him focus at school though. He is now a junior, I wish i had gotten him tested earlier, but no going back.

Is she taking anything for it or what has the dr. told you to do next?

She is on Concerta now, it works well but in the evening she gets very angry and aggressive. She is starting Risperidone this weekend to help with that. I am not sure what I think of that drug, but we will see.

I am new to this discussion and as a special educator, I feel I am gaining insight into so many characteristics of ADD and ADHD. I have taught students on these same medications and they seem to be more attentive and able to complete there work in class. But in the summer, many of my parents take them off the meds to give their bodies a break.. I would say make check with your doctor and consider all options.

Good day. I would love to have a teacher's honest input into how things go in school. Teachers have always told me that for the most part Heather is a magnificent student. However, she would have major episodes from time to time. What age group do you teach? Heather will be in tenth grade again next year. We are keeping her back in tenth grade because although she has always been an honor student we feel the curriculum at the alternative schools is not on the same level as that at the regular high school. She has been in alternative schools for five years now and we are finally transitioning her back to the emotional support class at our local high school.
