My son has suffered from paranoid delusions and bipolar disorder, which suddenly began 2 1/2 years ago while he was in college. He would get better with medication, most recently Zyprexa, but then stop taking it and get worse again. He was committed briefly 3 times, then recently arrested and committed for a month for forensic evaluation and treatment, after attacking his father. He doesn't believe he has done anything wrong, believes his civil rights are being violated and believes his family and friends are all against him.

Are there any suggestions on how to reach him? Has anyone experienced being in this state? What would have helped?

I really don't have words of wisdom for you. A non compliant bipolar is a hard thing to deal with. I am bipolar and I know. He is young and is probably thinking that he is not really sick and you are to blame for forcing pills on him.

The only thing I can suggest is that he not be allowed to live at home and all the perks that go with it like money and cellphones unless he agrees to be compliant but that could backfire and he end up homeless.

I would get a good therapist and talk to him about the situation and see what he says.

I have a link that deals with people who have a loved one who is paranoid. I hope it helps some.
