What Medications Are Used to Treat Anxiety Disorders?

Antidepressants, particularly the SSRIs, may also be effective in treating many types of anxiety disorders.

Other antianxiety medications include the benzodiazepines, such as Valium, Ativan and Xanax. These drugs do carry a risk of addiction so they are not as desirable for long term use. Other possible side effects include drowsiness, poor concentration and irritability.

Of the benzodiazepines clonazepam (Klonopin) seems to work best for many people...there is a chemically unrelated drug buspirone, which is marketed under the name of Bu-Spar ,but it takes up to two weeks to get a blood level sufficient to be effective in preventing panic attacks.

My pdoc has just started me on Xanax XR as she said I won't get the "ups and downs" of the immediate release. Does anyone know exactly how this med. works or how it is released. I'm at a loss! Hope everyone is doing well today!

Klonopin (clonazepam) would be a better drug for you. Buspar is not the same drug; BuSpar is Buspirone and it is not even in the same class of drugs. Xanax is the most potent benzodiazapine.

By extending the release of Xanax it takes on a more useful quality which resembles Klonopin.

I take Klonopin, like it better than the Buspar or Xanax. However, yesterday I did have 3 panic attacks. I am going through some stress tho, I have a heart procedure Fri apr 11 and I guess I am anxious about it and scared.

rk

just caught some information you wrote to me about BuSpar. I have never even TAKEN Buspar before LOL. I'm just trying to find out how the Xanax XR is released, i.e. how many mg. per hours, etc. etc.

I'm not trying to compare with any other benzos. as I am happy with this med at this time. Just wanted to see if anyone had anyone had anymore "technical" terminology per say. I feel each person responds to what they need on an individual basis, and I feel this is between you and your doctor. I'm not a doctor, but enjoying chatting with others about the issues of panic and some coping techniques. It's a stressful world for those of us who have it Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know I'll be glad to share my experiences with different meds I have taken for my panic and how the situation went. But please everyone, we are all different and discuss this thoroughly with your docs! Have a good one!

Ok, I re-read the thread and I have no idea what I was thinking when I wrote that. The preceding post do not say what I remember reading. I must have experienced a fibro-moment. So, that having been said.

Never mind me. I am an idiot.
