I was just doing some thinking...I told my dad about me thinking that I'm having panic attacks and his first response was "Maybe they can put you on something." Is medicine really necessary? Are there any other techniques? I really am not comfortable with relying on meds to get by =/

let me just say, the meds i was on WORKED WONDERS!!!! I have had panic attacks for 4 years and after the first 5 months, i was back to myslef again. Now don't get me wrong, i will get one now and then but compared to before, they are nothing! If you go to the Dr. he will explain how they work and your not on them your whole life. Most of it is that you need to learn how to control them. That is what i had to do and it does take some time. But my dr. said when people have panic attacks, it is due to a chemical inbalance. And the medician they usally put you on helps with that do get everything back in track. I also might give another pill to take if you are somewhere and feel one comming on, you just pop that pill and within 10 min. you feel alot better. I don't mean to sound like an addict but i was on Lexapro for 4 years and just recently got off of it put i just carry my Lorazapham around with me incase i feel one comming on and that seems to calm me down. There is alot of stuff out there to help you. Just ask your Dr. Hope this helps...

In my opinion, if you are still able to function in your life despite having the attacks, I would try other methods to cope with them, but if the attacks have really altered the way you're living your life or if you also have agoraphobia, I might suggest meds to try and help you overcome the life altering symptoms. I, myself, was home bound when I first started having my attacks so I was willing to try ANYTHING to get my life back. I started different meds, but didn't tolerate any of them very well. The only one I continued to take was the Ativan. I took it everyday for the first few weeks, until I reclaimed most of my life back. After that & still to this day, I keep the Ativan on me, but haven't needed to take any in almost four months.

I'd say it depends on the person and how bad off you are from the attacks. I would try other things first, if that's possible.
