I think that the most important coping mechanism for me as soon as I determined that I was having panic attacks was EDUCATION! Then for me recognizing how caffeine and nicotine influenced me. And finally admitting that alcohol and ESPECIALLY MARIJUANNA was screwing with my anxieties big time. Between education and 7 months sobriety, I have not had an attack for about 7 months.

I agree. I quit drinking coffee, alcohol and quit smoking cigs and seem to have a lot less anxiety. (Plus some healthy side effects) It's been two years since I quit coffee, 9 months since I quit smoking and several months for drinkin alcohol.

The only thing I would suggest is to keep trying. I tried and tried and tried...I must have quit smoking 10 times before it finally stuck! But it's been almost 9 months now and it's not hard. I don't want one and I wish I would have been able to break the spell sooner. I'm in Ohio. I wish you all the luck with quitting smoking! Don't give up!!

hey Ritagoller,

i too tried to quit smoking numerous times and couldn't. I'm one of those people that feel there is something m,orraly wrong with smoking and it still took me 10 years to quit. (keep in mind that I'm an alcoholic and an addict and that bipolars even use caffeine and nicotine in an effort to moderate moods.)

The miracle for my release from Nicotine was Wellbutrin 300mg!!!

After taking it for about 2 months I realized that I simply had no cravings!!! Truthfully, they were all but GONE!

Try it next time.

what has helped me is seeing a counselor who opened my eyes to my lack of personal power...I was taking on others feelings, and being overly responsible. Once I put that into perspective, and tell my self I am in control...no one else, but I am in control of my life, I have not had a panic attack. that is not to say that if I was trapped in an elevator, I would be OK? but I have had several instances where I say, oh no, this is it...I can't take this crowd, and boom....nothing....there is no attack. (I do not smoke cigarettes, pot, but I do drink coffee....and I do drink alcohol socially).
