Hello Everyone,

Well I never thought I would be researching anxiety and panic attacks online but I need some help. It all started on April 18th, 2012 where my entire world flipped upside down. This has been a nightmare ever since and I hope to look upon this thread in the near future and feel blessed to be better...but right now, I am dealing with anxiety attacks.

It all started on the day above when I was at work, I am currently a telecommuter and went into the office for a meeting. I have been home for about two years now, I am 27, and I never had any problems with group speaking and commonly sat in meetings for months at a time. During the meeting, I was winded and began thinking "what if something happened right now" which is something I never thought of before. That began my attack and it kicked my butt. While driving home from the meeting I thought I was having a heart attack since my hands crabbed up and my entire body was paralyzed. My breathing was through the roof and I fortunately made it to the E.R. where they just told me it was an anxiety attack (my first one).

I ended up going to my family physician, cheaper, and she gave me some xanax to help with the attacks. So far, I have had about 5 since last week. The first times were ROUGH in which depression kicked in. I am doing okay today as I have my breathing down okay. I am still working on the breathing.

Overall, I am planning on going to therapy to get rid of this gremlin. I have been reading the Bible which has helped me depression but I just want to feel like I am not the only one with this. I am scared...my wife is strong with me, but I just wanted your opinions on therapy and how to cope with it.

An update to my current anxious feelings is that my feet get cold/sweat, hands also, breathing of course, sometimes I get dizzy and tired, but mostly my nose gets stuffed and messes up my coping methods. Today, it feels like my throat is swollen but I know its the anxiety. I am regulating my heart rate okay so far but I get these depressed thoughts that this is my life now.

Thanks...

-Mike

Hey Mike welcome to the group!!! Oh how I remember and will never forget my first panic attack. That time was the hardest because I never even heard of a panic attack before in my life. Never knew how to cope with it. I think the more you learn and know the better coping skills you will learn and form. It seems that the first ones ever are the hardest because we are unaware of why the heck we even starte to have them to begin with. Which we may never know exactly why or how but we can learn to understand them and therefore cope with them.

They are the scariest things ever to deal with and they can be so intense and just take the life right out of us. But they cannot take the life out of us no sir. You will get through this and you will get better. You have to truly beleive that with all your heart and that is the just the beginning.

I am not a doctor although wish I was. LOL All of my comments are strictly my opinion only from my own experiences. I am on no medications at the time but have taken medication in the past. So anything I say about medication is only my opinion from the experiences I have had while on medication. Never stop taking or take medication without talking to your doctor first.

Hi Mike and welcome. I am so glad you found us. It will get better. The more tools you have to cope with this nasty monster the better you will be able to fight and win. Controlling your breathing is a huge factor. Slow, deep breathing, drinking very cold water, holding ice cubes seems to help me. I do take medication also but that is a personal choice.

You will find lots of great articles here and plenty of warm, caring people ready to listen and help when we can.

Hugs,

Welcome Mike! You have already seen the promise this group of wonderful people can offer. Their comments to you are heartfelt and sincere. These are not "Hallmark" cards, but things said by very real people with you directly in mind. The sincerity is real, so take us up on it!
May I be guided to accept others who may differ from me and always separate opinion from fact. I insist that others put the benefit of the group before anything else, regardless of a well meaning agenda. If what you say is a fact, you can back it up. If not, it's opinion and should be called that. The safety of members is paramount.

Welcome to the Group Mike!

Oh we have all been there and still are. You are not alone in this. Smile

We understand what your going through, because we live it. As you develop new tools, and learn relaxation methods and better coping skills, it does get more managable.

There are lots of useful articles here, caring people ready to help, or advise if they can. Soley on our own experiences. And support and listen when you need us.

I have hyperventilated to the point my arms were bending backwards on their own, talk about scary? But the more I know and learn the less fear panic attacks instill in me today. I have had them 11 or so years know.
