Been going through a lot lately. Just started having panic attacks about three and a half weeks ago. the doctor started me on lexapro (because I was on it once before) but I have never had panic attacks before. They are extremely frightening and I wondered if anyone knew how long it takes for the lexapro to kick in and stop the panic attacks. The doctor keeps saying a month...and i am tired of taking the xanax to lead a "normal" life. I know I am new...I just need some advice and guidance...anyone...help?

Welcome Pacosfather,

Here is some info, if you have been using lexapro for 3 1/2 weeks you will feel the difference soon, lexapro is an excellent medication. Again Welcome to the forum!!! =)

How should I take Lexapro?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from the medication.

Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Try to take the medicine at the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

To be sure you get the correct dose of liquid Lexapro, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

It may take 4 weeks or longer before you start feeling better. Do not stop using Lexapro without first talking to your doctor. You may have unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this medication suddenly. Store Lexapro at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Pacosfather... I hope the lexapro does good for you... I try to be honest... I don't believe there is a miracle drug that takes the panic attacks away.. I think the meds along with CBT therapy is the best results.. I took lexapro early in my recovery for depression cause by the ongoing anxiety...I wish you luck and urge you to start to get the most info about panic disorder you can... understanding the disorder is very important... I take Lexapro as well. When I first started taking it, it took about 2 weeks for me to feel a little more normal. At 4 weeks, it had completely kicked in. I went off of it and started it again a few days ago, and I'm anxiously awaiting the moment when I feel more like myself again! I'm taking ativan in between to ward off panic attacks, so I know what you mean about the xanax. Give it a little more time and best of luck to you!!
